INSIDE SCOOP: Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care

Are you an expectant mother, a new mom or know someone who is? I have exciting news to share with you!

Marcelle Cosmetics and Thyme Maternity have partnered up to create a skin care line targeted for moms-to-be and new moms. Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care will be launching at Thyme Maternity stores near you on November 5, 2015!

Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care

Being a new mom myself, I’m so thrilled for this collaboration (see my Instagram account where I sneak in a few baby photos here and there :P)! While I was pregnant I read that there are certain ingredients to avoid in skin care products to help prevent pregnancy complications and birth defects. Salicylic acid, retinol, and oxybenzone to name a few, are very common in many of our daily skin care products but are recommended to be avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding as a precaution. With already being careful with what I was eating, I didn’t want to add skin care ingredients to the list of “what not to do/wear/eat when pregnant”. This discouraged me and I must admit, resulted in me not really using many skin care products during my pregnancy (thank goodness for that pregnancy glow!).

With already being a fan of Marcelle’s skin care products, I would have totally gone out to buy the Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care line while I was pregnant. Marcelle is a brand that I trust and can rely on with its hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products (gaaawd knows how sensitive we are to scents while pregnant … gag!).

Thankfully it’s not too late for me to use this line as they also have products for post-pregnancy. Heck … pregnant, post-pregnant or not…anyone can really use these products for various reasons (stretch marks, unfortunately, can appear on anyone)! This would be a wonderful gift idea for a mom-to-be, by the way! 😉

Here is what Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care has to offer:

Stretch Mark Triple Action Cream – $28 CDN

To prevent or reduce the look of stretch marks we should keep our skin hydrated from day one — the day we find out we are pregnant (even though we don’t see that baby bump yet)! This product improves the skin’s elasticity and provides hydration to the skin. It is non-sticky and fragrance-free. I would recommend not only focusing on applying this on your belly, but also on your thighs, sides of your breasts and back, and triceps … pretty much any part of your body prone to stretching! For me, post-pregnancy, I find I can still benefit from this product as I find areas where I have stretch marks still need that extra hydration and suppleness.

Marcelle - stretch mark triple action cream

Facial Moisturizer – Anti-imperfection + Radiance – $25

Ah, I wish I had this when I was pregnant. Although many are blessed with the “pregnancy glow”, we do need that extra radiance and hydration which this product can provide. This product also has properties which help prevent uneven skin tone and diminish fine lines.

Marcelle_Facial Moisturizer – Anti-imperfection + Radiance

Moisturizing Body Oil – $20 CDN

I find best applied on damp skin after you get out of the shower, this product keeps your skin soft and hydrated to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. This non-greasy product can be used in conjunction with the Stretch Mark Triple Action Cream or you can use the cream in the morning and the oil at night (or vice versa). Gently massage this oil in circular motions on your belly, side of breasts, thighs, butt, biceps and back (anywhere prone to stretching) to let it absorb into the skin.

Lifting and Firming Cream – Bust and Body -$25 CDN

This product tones and firms the skin. We all know what happens to our body post-pregnancy and post-breastfeeding! LOL!

Marcelle_lLifting and Firming Cream – Bust and Body

Nursing Nipple Balm – $15 CDN

Any new mom would be thankful for this product! We all know how much we nurse during the first few weeks after baby is born (and during their growth spurts)! This product is lanolin-free and contains shea butter, sunflower oil, and vitamin E to help soothe the sore nipples and reduce redness. This is also safe for the baby. Gently massage this on your sore nipples after breastfeeding.

How to Naturally Contour for Everyday Make-up

Originally popular in theatre & drag make-up, contouring has become admired by everyday make-up lovers the last few years. Does Kim Kardashian and YouTube play a huge part in this contouring craze? Probably.  As a result, contouring is a beautiful step recently added to many people’s everyday make-up routine. It can come in different formulas: cream, liquid or powder and with one or two shades darker than your skin tone, it can add dimension back to your face.

For a naturally subtle sculpted face, I like to use the powder formula. One of my favourites is Benefit Cosmetics, “Hoola”. With its matte finish and taupe shade, it softly recedes areas of the face I want to define, such as, my cheekbones and nose. Gently apply the contour powder to the hallows of the cheeks and the sides of the bridge of your nose. This creates shadows on your face.

Contouring with Hoola

When contouring, a rule of thumb is to follow-up with highlighting. I like to use Benefit Cosmetics, “Watt’s Up” highlighter which gives your skin a beautiful glow. Apply this to where the sun would naturally hit your face, such as, the high points of your cheeks and the top of the bridge of your nose.

Contour & Highlight

With both contouring and highlighting, you have now achieved a naturally defined look. One more tip: remember to blend, blend, BLEND! You don’t want to see any harsh lines!

Looking for a Long Lasting Eyeliner? Try This One!

Long-lasting waterproof eyeliner

“I love when my eyeliner disappears part way through the day!”

“I’m looking for an eyeliner that transfers on to your top eye lid. Do you have any recos?”

“The make-up look I envision on my wedding day is the ‘raccoon eye look’.”

… said no one EVER!

It’s crazy to think that these words would come out of someone’s mouth, right? (My hands are up and I surrender if this ever becomes a make-up trend! haha)

A few months ago, I was using whatever eyeliner I had in my make-up stash because my go-to one, which I purchased in Japan, has recently seen its last days (K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo). There have been days this summer where I have come home looking like a hot mess because this eyeliner transferred on to the top of my eye lids (wait a second, why didn’t anyone tell me? :P).

With that being said, I was on a hunt for a long-lasting LIQUID eyeliner replacement that had the same longevity as the one from Japan. I sought out the opinions of my beauty-lovin’ Instagram friends to see what their faves are (click here). Many good brands were named, such as Stila, Eyeko, Make-up Forever, MAC, Covergirl, Kat Von D and Physicians Formula (thanks IG friends for the recommendations!). Two that really stood out among the rest were Stila “Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner” and Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” — two eyeliners that have already been on my radar due to its waterproof attribute.

I went to the nearest Sephora and took a closer look at the two. It was a close toss up between the two liquid eyeliners. Both had impressive staying power and high-pigment application, but I decided to grab the Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” (in “Trooper” aka black) simply because of its bristle applicator (vs. the felt tip applicator of Stila). Although I was previously a fan of felt tip eyeliners, I have been diggin’ the bristle applicators as of late because it doesn’t dry out and fray like the felt tips one do.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

Almost two months have gone by since I have been using the Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” and I am very happy with my purchase. It withstood the hottest of days this summer and left my eyes looking fresh all day. The application is pigmented and smooth with just the right amount of liquid eyeliner running through the fine bristles to easily create your desired eyeliner look. If you are a fan of a slight sheen finish, this is the liner for you!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner - Application Result

As you can see, after 14 hours, it had minimal fade. I highly recommend this eyeliner!

Make-up Application Tip: The less pressure you use, the thinner the line. Therefore, light pressure = thin line and heavy pressure = thick line. Play around with it to practice your control and see which look you prefer!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is available in two shades: “Trooper “- ink black or “Mad Max Brown” – rich chocolate brown. You can find it at  Sephora for $23 CAD.

What is your favourite eye liner? Comment below, I would love to hear!

Tips on Wedding Make-up Application

Makeup application for weddings is slightly different compared to your everyday makeup. The wedding day, whether it’s your special day or someone else’s close to you, is a busy and long-filled day. Whether you are getting your makeup done by an artist or doing it yourself, here are some tips to ensure you get the best wearing power from your look:

  • Take care of your skin leading up to the wedding day: drink lots of water, exfoliate, tone and moisturize.
  • For hot spring/summer wedding days, to ensure your foundation doesn’t melt off your face, apply a face primer, like Cover FX Skin Prep Nourishing Foundation Primer. Not only does this act as a great base for a smoother foundation application, it keeps the oils in for a long lasting finish.
  • To avoid eye shadow from creasing due to the oils and heat, apply an eyelid primer to your eyes, Urban Decay Primer Potion. This increases the staying power of your eye shadow as well as makes the colours more vibrant.
  • Stay away from too much shimmer on the eyes, face, and lips. It’s not flattering in photos.
  • If you know you will get teary-eyed throughout the event, waterproof products are the way to go. Try using Make Up For Ever Waterfproof Cream Eyeshadow in “Aqua Black” as your eyeliner and L’Oréal Waterproof Volumunious mascara to pump up your lashes.
  • To avoid applying your lipstick too many times throughout the day, fill your lips in with lip liner to use as the lipstick base, L’Oreal Colour Riche Anti-Feathering Lip Liner. Apply a matte lipstick over it to increase the wear, Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate. Remember to moisturize your lips before applying the lip products; this will help prevent your lips from drying out.
  • To keep your makeup looking fresh all day, set it with a setting spray, Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Spray.
  • If you have an excellent makeup application, all you need to pop in your clutch is a lipstick and blotting sheets, Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets for minimal touch-ups throughout the day!
  • Remember, your makeup should only be an enhanced version of yourself. You want to look and feel beautiful and still look like YOU!

New Season. Fresh Look!

Hello [cyber] world!

I have been on hiatus, but I am back! I am working on a fresh new look with a new “home” (finally decided to get and a new “wardrobe” ( noob). Who said websites can’t get a Spring make-over too?

Can’t wait for you to see what I have in store. But in the meantime, feel free to leave a comment below on what you would like to see, topics you would like to discuss, or just to simply say, “Hello”!

{REVIEW} Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in “Sultry Samba”

The Rio Rush Gucci Westman Collection is a limited edition collection which was inspired by the “summary nature of the Brazilian culture of Rio de Janeiro”.

Gucci Westman was inspired by the famous ‘Carnaval’ in Brazil and “aimed to evoke a celebration of life, dancing and colours” in her collection. This collection includes beautiful shades of nail lacquers, lipsticks, and eye shadows. But today I will focus on one of the products in the collection.

This collection launched in June 2014 and will be in stores while quantities last.

For those who want to step into the world of wearing bold, vibrant lipstick but are still a bit nervous, I would recommend trying the Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipsticks from the Rio Rush Gucci Westman Limited Collection.

I tried out the lipstick in the shade “Sultry Samba” which is a beautiful bright pink shade with a slight purple undertone. This is a gorgeous shade for a sunny day or even to brighten up a natural make-up look. (Shhh … I’m going to tell you a little secret: I wore this on a day where I felt super tired and it just brightened up my face and made it look like I had all the sleep and energy in the world!)

{Tess’ First Impression}

The formula is not as pigmented as I expected. To get the vibrancy and full coverage of the lipstick, multiple layers will need to be applied on your lips. For those who are vibrant lipstick veterans, I would say this lipstick may not be for you. You can find a more pigmented formula with a similar shade elsewhere (“Fuschia” by Joe Fresh).

On the upside, this is why I think this lipstick is a great way to introduce someone to bold, bright lipsticks. This lipstick is buildable which allows for more control on how light or dark you want the coverage to be which is perfect for someone still trying to get used to wearing bold lips.

This formula is a gorgeous matte finish which I find isn’t drying to the lips. However, a tip for wearing any matte lipstick …  put on lip balm beforehand and let it absorb into your lips.

The shade “Sultry Samba” is a beautiful shade that looks great on every skin colour. Bonus: with its bluish/purplish undertone, it makes your teeth look whiter (who doesn’t love whiter teeth? ;P)!

This lipstick coverage is after three applications

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream

(Top to bottom: Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Antwerp)

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream  is very lightweight on the lips with a creamy velvety touch. Its non-sticky texture makes you feel like you are wearing nothing on your lips. One layer is just enough to brighten up your face and it is definitely buildable for an even more intense look. Its staying power is amazing due to its fast-dry matte finish. Try blotting your lips on a tissue or try kissing the cheek (or lips ;D) of a loved one…It doesn’t really transfer! You’ll be very impressed!

This impressive lip product can be found at a Rexall or Target near you. It retails for approximately $8.99 each.

If you get it now it’s “Buy One Get One 50% off” at Rexall until this Thursday, June 19, 2014! Hurry and get yours now! (I went to two Rexall locations and there selection was running low.)

LOTD: NYX Matte Lipstick

I like to wear my fave drink on my lips! Now all I need is the sun shining, warm weather and a patio! :-p

Here is my Lipstick Of The Day (#LOTD):
NYX Matte lipstick in “Strawberry Daiquiri”

Quick Review:

  • Matte finish – ensure your lips are moisturized prior to applying lipstick
  • Very pigmented
  • Long-lasting
  • Beautiful shade and flattering for most skin types

{HAUL}: MAC Cosmetics

Pro Longwear Concealer – “NW30”
Concealer that provides a medium to full coverage; claims to last 15 hours

  • I bought this to cover the darkness under my eyes. My foundation is usually “NC42″ but I got “NW30″ to correct and brighten the darkness underneath my eyes. This was highly recommended to me by one of my make-up artist friends. I got a little sample and tested it for a few days and loved the coverage and finish. This concealer did not look drying underneath the eyes and if definitely did not enhance my usually-subtle wrinkles which other concealers have done.

Lipstick – “Russian Red” (matte) & “Ruby Woo”  (retro-matte)
Intense & vibrante blue-red  shade

  • I have wanted both shades for a very long time and couldn’t decide on which shade to get, so I bought both! They both look very similar in the tube, but when I applied, one is more matte than the other and one is more bright in shade.

Pro Longwear Paint Pot – “Soft Ocre”
Long-lasting, pigmented cream shadow

  • I’ve been using “Painterly” Paint Pot for years. But noticed that it’s sometimes too light for my clients. I have always wanted to try “Soft Ocre” as it’s a bit darker and more yellow. I use this as an eye primer to act as a good base before applying eye shadow.

Can’t wait to use these products! Have you tried any of these?
