{Beauty Panel} Who is your Celebrity Hair + Make-up Inspiration?

A celebrity I always look to for hair and make-up inspiration is Eva Longoria. Whenever I want a fresh ‘do, I tend to Google her name, save the photo on my phone and then show the hair dresser.

One of my favourite hairstyles of hers is when she wears her hair down and curled:

My hair is thick and layered and with the right tools and technique I’ve been able to recreate her look many times over. When I’m in a rush, I use both a hot roller set and a curling iron. A hot roller set is so quick and easy to use and the curling iron gives me more curl control.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Side part your hair and separate the front section of your hair on both your left and right side. (We will be curling this section with a curling iron later on.)
  2. Take a hot roller set and apply the rollers in different directions (some outwards away from the face and others downwards). Ensure that what you do on one side, you do on the other in order to keep the curls symmetrical.
  3. For this look, I prefer loose curls so the jumbo and super jumbo sized rollers do the trick! Because my hair is medium in length, I tend to just use the jumbo rollers. The super jumbo rollers do not give me as much of a curl for this look.
  4. Once the rollers have cooled off, take them out.
  5. Take your curling iron (1” – 1.5”) and curl the two front sections you kept aside. Curl your hair away from your face as it opens up your face and neck giving it a more flattering look.
  6. Once this is all done, get your favourite hairspray and spray away!
  7. To loosen up the curls, gently and lightly pull some of the curls straight. I don’t run my fingers through my hair because I don’t want to create more volume — my hair is already pretty thick! And there you have it, Eva Longoria-inspired curls!

Not only does Eva’s hair styles inspire me, but her bronzed, natural makeup is also a look I like to emulate. Here’s a few quick makeup tips:

  • Some people have told me that they are afraid their eyes would look tired with this look because of the brown tones. To brighten up, use an off-white pencil (more natural than white) and rim the inner lower lash line. Also, a few coats of mascara will really help open up the eyes.
  •  To deepen up a bronzy, natural eye look, take a black eye shadow and apply a bit of it on the outer corner of the eyes and gently blend up.
  • If you are limited on products, take your matte bronzer and apply it to the hallows of your cheeks and then sweep it onto the crease of your eyes. This will help warm up those beautiful eyes.

    Long-lasting? Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencil

One of my favourite black pencils, Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencil, is on my eyes today.

This pencil is not just a pencil, but it is a creamy eye shadow in a pencil form — a jumbo pencil form to be exact!
My all-time favourite colour of them all is Licoriche. It’s not just black, but it’s super black! Very pigmented, opaque and it glides on like buttah (butter)!
It’s easy to blend to create a gorgeous evening smokey-eye or a subtle daytime smokey-eye (like the one I’m wearing today) and it stays put ALL day. It can even act as the perfect eye shadow base all over your lids and can be applied to your waterline!
These pencils come in a range of different colours (click here) so you can definitely have lots of fun playing with your eye make-up!
Pick up your Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencil at your local drugstore ($8.95) and give it a try!

Who Said Girls Can’t Have a ‘Stache too?

Movember is that time of month when guys grow (or attempt to grow :P) their moustaches to raise money for prostate cancer and other male cancers. But what about the ladies? How can we support our dudes?

Annabelle Cosmetics is looking out for us ‘Mo Sistas and will be donating to the Movember Foundation with our contribution.

Who said ladies can’t have a ‘stache too?

How to contribute to the Annabelle Movember Donation Project

    1. Using your favourite Annabelle lipliner, lipstick, lipgloss or even eye pencil, draw a moustache above your upper lip and snap a picture.
    2. Upload the picture on your own Pinterest board. For your participation to translate into a donation, you must use the hashtag #AnnabelleMovember in the Pin description and tell us which Annabelle product was used to draw your moustache. Annabelle will repin your picture onto her own Annabelle Pinterest “#AnnabelleMovember Mo Sistas2012” board and donate one dollar ($1) for every valid picture.

To sum it all up: They commit the cash, you supply the moustache.

Here is my contribution on Pinterest:

Ladies, you have to admit … you can’t wait ’til your dude shaves off his ‘stache, huh!

    MAC Pro’s Body Painting Event

MAC held a body painting cocktail event on Tuesday, October 23rd at the pro store on Queen St. W. in Toronto. It was an evening full of MAC Pro Members and their guests, MAC artists, cocktails and an almost nude male model (did I get your attention? :P). MAC couldn’t have chosen the perfect time to promote their Acrylic Paints … right before Hallowe’en!

Mac Pro Acrylic Paints (missing in photo: white)

Mac Pro Acrylic Paints come in 10 vibrant colours.

    Pure Red
    Rich Purple
    Landscape Green
    Primary Yellow
    Genuine Orange
    Marine Ultra (blue)
    Black Black
    Process Magenta (pink)
    Pure White
    Hi-Def Cyan (light blue)

There was a mannequin at the event where the guests could get a feel for the Acrylic Paints by “Painting by Number”. Just like we were kids, there were numbers assigned for each colour. We grabbed the corresponding colour and painted away!

Here I am painting two petals green:

I made my way around to speak to various MAC Artists. I’m not so familiar with body painting so I wanted to pick their brains!

Tips I learned from the MAC Artists at this event:

    • To prevent the products from drying and oxidizing, pour a bit of the paint onto a palette or plate and put the cover back on the container.
    • Don’t use expensive brushes when painting with these MAC Pro Acrylic Paints.
    •  Use an oil-based brush cleaner to clean the brushes.
    • You can mix colours to create your desired colour. You can also do some fading/shading while the paint is wet.

Here is one of the MAC artists showing me how to shade the acrylic paints:

The MAC Artists told me these Acrylic Paints don’t fade. The colour stays vibrant throughout the day and it doesn’t transfer or smear!

I just had to put it to the test when I got home:

    They were right!

I would highly recommend this product for creative photoshoots and for the everyday woman who wants a black liner to last all day. This would also be perfect for your wedding day!

Before I go, I just want to leave you with this:

Uhhh-huh! I wasn’t exaggerating when I mentioned “an almost nude male model”! LOL

    Happy Painting!

    2012 Beauty List

In 2011, I think I was pretty good with my beauty product purchases — my make-up envelope of receipts were not as THICK as previous years, which means I did good! Plus, I believe almost all my purchases were on sale or discounted meaning the total amount spent must be way less in comparison to the past.  (Must pat myself on theee back.)

Now that it’s a new year, I’m looking to stay on track with budgeting and hopefully do even  better than last year. To help me with that, I figured I should make a 2012 Beauty Purchase List so I don’t go off the tracks with my buys.

I’m not the beauty lover who needs (aka wants) to buy or try everything and anything new on the market. I’m very selective on my purchases and am willing to spend more money on certain items, such as on foundation than on lipsticks, etc. I also love a great deal, so if I’m willing to wait until products go on sale.

Here are a few products I’ve been wanting to try for a while now, which I may purchase this year:

    1. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner

I am definitely a cat-eye kinda gal! For years I’ve been going back and forth with MAC’s Blacktrack Fluidline and MUFE’s Aquablack Cream Shadow. Love these two products, but one liner that also tops the charts is the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. I’ve been meaning to try this water-resistant, smudge-proof liner for years now, so if Sephora has any of their deals (20% off or $15-$20 off deal) or if I go to the U.S., I think I may cross this off the must-purchase list!

    2. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

I’ve been using the St. Yves Gentle exfoliator, which I’ve heard mixed reviews about. I’ve used their new formulation which now have tinier granules that make it more gentle on the skin, so I don’t have much to complain about. But I’ve heard great things about this Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. It’s different than the typical exfoliator — it’s powder. Apparently, you are supposed to mix it with your wet hands to create a creamy paste and apply it onto your skin resulting in a smooth, bright, soft layer. I still have to look into the price, but all I know is that it’s waaaaaay more than the St. Yves exfoliator! (This means, I’ll have to cut down on my bubble tea consumption haha)

    3. INGLOT Eye Shadows

    10 Square Eye Shadow

Rainbow Eye Shadows (in many colours)

I’ve seen these eye shadows on so many blogs and YouTube make-up tutorials.  They seem to be very pigmented and have a good range of colours!  There is no Inglot in my city and I’m not one to buy items online so the next time I go to Montreal or the U.S., I’m going straight to INGLOT!

That’s pretty much it for my 2012 list! Short, I know!! 😀

    Okaay…there is one last product.

The product below, I’m a little iffy on purchasing (I know most of you might think I’m crazy because this product is like the ‘talk of the town’ right now!)

    4. Urban Decay’s Naked2 Palette

I love Urban Decay’s eye shadows. They are very pigmented! As much as I’d like to jump on the Naked or Naked2 bandwagon, I’m a little hesitant on this purchase because of the price and the amount of matte shadows there are — only three in the Naked2 palette (even less in the Naked palette). Plus, I already have a few of those eye shadow colours from another palette. So to be quite honest, I would rather purchase the INGLOT eye shadows if I had to choose.

The products above are the first to pop up in my mind when I quickly think of products I would like to try. So I think my 2012 list is pretty good because it’s limited! But who knows, it’ll probably grow throughout the year. :S

My list is to be continued …

    So, what’s on your list?

    How was your holidays?
Mine was filled with family, friends, and lots of food … which you could probably tell with my tired eyes and chubby cheeks! HAHA
This is “tired” me with only 3 hrs of sleep …
Wishing you a year of good health, happiness, inspiration & love! 🙂
It’s a new year … so let’s do the things we love, try things we’ve never tried before, and surround yourself with with positive & motivating people!

    xoxo TESS

    Favourite Make-up Set (thus far) . . .

    Kit includes:
    – Reflection High Shine Lip Gloss
    – Lash DNA Mascara (Jet Black)
    – Eye Palette (Encore)
    – Photo Finish Foundation Primer (Travel Size)
    – Blush/Soft Lights Duo (Style/Icon)

Eye Shadows – In these pictures the colours look a tiny bit yellow due to my flash. So just picture the colours a little more deep….especially the deep burgundy (4th colour from the left).

(FYI – I like the pigmentation way better than MAC eye shadows!! )

Eye Shadow palette also comes with a black (gel-based) eye liner and a cute little travel brush (one end is an eye shadow brush and one end is an eye liner brush)….this beats those CHEAP LOOKING spongey applicators that come with other eye shadows!! 🙂

    Blush/Soft Lights Duo (Style/Icon)

    Tess’ Quick Review:

    – Reflection High Shine Lip Gloss

    • Love the texture
    • Not sticky like MAC lip glasses
    • Beautiful pearlescent sheen
    • Looks nice on bare lips (without any liner or lipstick) and gives a nice shine when wearing over liner or lipstick

    – Lash DNA Mascara (Jet Black)

    • Double helix brush is a cool concept, but I feel the brush is too big for my small eyes making it a little hard to apply properly
    • Does add volume to my lashes
    • Loves how DARK my lashes look

    – Eye Palette (Encore)

    (Eye Shadows)

    • Love the colours
    • Very pigmented
    • Extremely versitile – you can create many different colour combos and looks
    • Use this palette both day & night
    • Easy to travel with and it comes with a big size mirror.
    • Like the tiny eye liner and eye shadow brush it’s waaaay better than the crappy sponge applicators that other brands provide!)

    (Eye liner)

    • Does not last as long as the MAC’s Blacktrack Fluidline
    • They claim it’s smudgeproof, but I think it still smudges
    • Great to use as a base over your eye lid for a smokey eye look

    – Photo Finish Foundation Primer (Travel Size)

    • Favourite primer so far
    • Loves the texture – leaves skin looking smooth and feeling silky
    • Reduces size of large pores (really notice it on my nose)
    • Helps make my foundation last longer throughout the day

    – Blush/Soft Lights Duo (Style/Icon)

    • Not super pigmented which creates a natural look
    • It’s buildable so you can add more layers if needed
    • Colours create a soft and natural look
    • Brightens up my face
This kit was purchased from Shopper’s Drugmart’s Beauty Boutique for $68!!!
The value is close to $200!!! This was an awesome deal!

Hopefully you guys can still find this kit. If so, let me know what you think about it!

    Thanks for stoppin’ by!

    Eyeliner Test

Everytime I do make-up for a wedding, some of the most common questions I get are… “Will my eyeliner last even after I cry?” “Will my eyeliner smudge throughout the night?” Here’s my answer, “Nope, you are all good!”

Just to put it to the test, I decided to test 3 eyeliners which I’ve used on clients in the past:

    1. Maybelline New York’s Unstoppable Eyeliner – Onyz – $9

Waterproof liner glides on to define your eyes effortlessly for ultra-smooth application.

    • Smudge-proof, stay-put formula won’t budge until you want it to
    • Self-sharpening packaging swivels up and down so point is always sharp and ready to define
    • Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, ophthalmologist-tested

    2. Mac’s Fluidline – Blacktrack – $18

Ultra-smooth, Fluidline’s gel formula provides the precision of a liquid liner with a silkier, softer finish. Goes on “foolproof” with a brush in an easy dip-and-stroke action. Long-wearing. Smudge-proof. Lines up in a rich array of colours and finishes. Brush sold separately.

    3. Urban Decay’s 24/7 – Zero -$17

The best Eye Pencil ever, ever, ever! Never before has a pencil this creamy and brilliant been waterproof, too. Velvety-soft, this never-before-seen formula stays soft and creamy for blending (about 30 seconds), then dries down to a long-lasting finish that WILL NOT budge.

Tips: 24/7 Eye Pencils are ideal for lining inner lids because the waterproof formula stays put. Just apply, try not to blink for a sec, and you’ve got immovable liner.

Experiment: I swiped these three eyeliners on my hand. Let it dry for about 20 min. Ran warm water on my finger and swiped it on all three lines putting light pressure on it.

    1. Swiped the three eyeliners on my hand.
    2. Let it set for 20 min.
    3. Wet my finger with warm water
    4. With light pressure, rubbed my wet finger on one line 10 times.
    5. Repeated two more times for the other two lines.

All three liners stayed intact. No smudging, no fade in colour!

After warm water was smudged constantly along each line:

    1. Maybelline New York’s Unstoppable Eyeliner – Onyz
    2. Mac’s Fluidline – Blacktrack
    3. Urban Decay’s 24/7 – Zero (I purposely smudged the line within 30 seconds after applying – just as advertised. Did not smudge further after wetting it)
    Urban Decay’s 24/7 – Zero

    Factors to consider:

    • It wasn’t humid in the room I was conducting my experiment in. Depending on the temperature, it might alter the result.
    • I didn’t set the eyeliner with black eyeshadow. Setting your liner with eyeshadow helps the liner last even longer.
    • The result may differ when tested on the water line.
    • I ran my swiped hand under the running warm water and tried smudging it with my finger….there was a very littlye to none of fading therefore the smudging wasn’t obvious.

These three eyeliners definitely holds true to what they advertise. Did not smudge until I forced it and even so, it was not noticeable.

When I first swiped the three liners, I noticed MAC’s Fluidline (Blacktrack) was the most bold and the Maybelline and UD liner were just about the same. UD liner definitely did stay soft and creamy for a while (just like what it said in the description), which allows you to create a smudged smokey look if desired. I’ve been using Mac’s Fluidline for years and when I get feedback from clients, they say their liner has lasted all day. I have personally tried all three and I like Mac’s Fluidline the best.

Let me know which eyeliners you enjoy wearing! 🙂
