L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder

Price:  $16.99
Size: 27 ml (0.9 oz)
Shades: 12 shades (light to medium-dark skin tones)

To apply:

  • Before applying, shake the bottle to mix the formula.
  • L’Oreal recommends using your fingers to apply rather than a foundation brush. Ensure you have clean fingers so you do not transfer dirt and oil onto your skin.
  • Once you apply one layer, I suggest going back to apply a second on areas that need more coverage (i.e., acne scars) by dabbing it on with your finger. I continue to dab and build on top until I get the desired coverage and it blends well into my skin.
  • This product dries to powder so there is no need to apply a powder over to set the foundation.

Claims:

  • glides on
  • transform into a powdery finish (liquid-powder formula)
  • no make-up feel

My Observations:

  • I’m not a huge fan of applying foundation with my fingers. But applying this foundation, wasn’t too bad. Like any other foundation, you just have to work fast before the foundation dries to avoid streak marks.
  • The consistency is very liquidy and more product comes out then what I intend. If it was a pump bottle, I think it would help control the amount of product coming out.
  • The coverage is a light to medium matte coverage. I think it’s a great foundation for an everyday wear to even out the skin tone and cover any light scars or imperfection. However, I do not recommend this foundation if you are looking to cover a lot of acne.
  • This product does dry to powder and it gives such a beautiful finish to the skin. With a combination skin type (oily t-zone), applying a powder on top is not necessary.
  • My skin feels very smooth and the foundation feels extremely lightweight as if I’m not wearing anything at all.
  •  This contains SPF 18. Great for everyday wear to protect yours skin from the UV rays.

Shade: Sun Beige

Note:
no face primer applied underneath
no powder applied over to set
Note:
Foundation faded a tad bit (you can see the acne scar on my chin a bit more)
Nose and area above my eyebrow got a bit oily
Skin still looked quite even

 Conclusion:
I have received so many compliments on the appearance of my skin whenever I wear this foundation.  With the lightweight feel and natural, smooth finish I would recommend this foundation for those who want a light to medium coverage everyday foundation. My skin gets moderately oily on my nose and center of my forehead, but I found I didn’t need to powder over this foundation. However, if your skin gets extremely oily, I would recommend lightly powder in those areas or where a face primer underneath.

Have you tried this foundation? What are your thoughts?

What is your everyday make-up look?

Don’t be afraid to MASK it!

As I walked into the family room I yelled out “Surrrprrrise!”. I decided to surprise my love with my face covered in a light-blue clay mask! His response, “You are still beautiful!”. Aaah, what shhhhhweetheart! Wait until he sees my skin after I wash it all off! Smooth and soft like a baby’s bottom! Lol 😉

My skin has been acting up lately so I thought I should take extra care of it. I’ve been breaking out more often and it’s probably due to life events (holidays, moving, etc.).

As I was getting ready for bed, I saw a clay mask I haven’t used in a looong time, Freeman Feeling Beautiful Facial Clay Mask. It has avocado, oatmeal and Vitamin E which help reduce clogged pores, removes excess oils & dirt, and makes your skin feel smooth. A bonus? This product smells lovely too!

How often should you wear a clay mask?
It really depends on your skin type. I would suggest using it once a week. But if your skin tends to be on the oily side you may be able to get away with using it twice a week. Clay masks suck out excess oil that can clog your pores.
How do you apply the clay mask?
Typically, the steps are as follows:
    1. Cleanse your face.
    2. Dry your face.
    3. Apply a thin layer of the clay mask all over your face and go down to your neck. Work around your eyes and ensure yoj don’t get too close.
    4. Let the clay ask completely dry until your face feels extremely tight and stiff.
    5. Rinse off with warm water.
    6. Pat your face dry with a towel.
    … and VOILA! Beautiful skin!
I know, masks can be scurrry, but don’t be afraid to use them. Your skin will thank you at the end! 🙂 Plus, if your partner is like mine, he might be jealous of the soft skin and want to try the clay mask too! 😛
I purchased this product at Wal-mart.

LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face} – Smoothing Facial Scrub

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram (@makeupbytess), you may have seen me tweet yesterday morning that I was going to try the Smoothing Facial Scrub from LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face}.

Many of you were asking how I liked it …

    Here is my first impression:

    • I was very impressed with how small the granules were. I find the smaller the granules, the more gentle it is on our skin. In the instructions it says it can be used 3 times a week where most scrubs recommend we use once a week.
    • The fragrance of the product was very light and mild. You can tell it is made of natural products (cornmeal).
    • After rinsing my face, my skin felt smooth and looked a bit more refreshed and polished.

You obviously have to try a product more than once to get a better sense of if it works for you or not, but so far I am really impressed!

    Let’s Go Green: LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face}

Have you ever tried a skin care line or cosmetic company that was eco-friendly and cruelty-free?
    I have to admit, I think this may be my first time! {eeek! Special moment! Lol}

LIVE CLEAN contacted me to try out their {FRESH FACE} line and I happily agreed! Why was I excited?

    1. Weeks before they contacted me, my friend and I were actually talking about LIVE CLEAN. She asked me if I’ve ever tried their products and how she was going to head out to Wal-mart to give their lotion and shampoo & conditioner a try. She has very sensitive skin (eczema) and tends to react to products easily. i spoke to her after her initial use of the lotion and she told me she received no reaction. That was a GREAT SIGN!
    2. LIVE CLEAN is an eco-friendly, GO-GREEN line.
    3. Completely vegan (no animal products or animal by-products) and are cruelty-free (not tested on animals).
    4. Hypo-allergenic and dermatologist tested.
    5. Claims to be great for extremely sensitive skin.

After receiving their products I also learned that:

    • Their products are plant-based and contains Lavender, Cucumber Chamomile, Milk Thistle, Aloe and Jasmine.
    • Free of all these chemicals found in shampoos, skin care, etc. such as, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Diethanolamine (DEA), parabens, and phthalates.
    • Packaging is recyclable and ‘made from “virgin” materials, making it easier to recycle than most plastics’.
LIVE CLEAN’s {FRESH FACE} collection has eight products:
    Foaming Daily Cleanser [$14.99]
    Deep Cleansing Clay Masque [$19.99]
    Smoothing Facial Scrub [$14.99]
    Refreshing Facial Toner [$14.99]
    Soothing Daily Moisturizer [$19.99]
    Glowing Daily Serum [$22.99]
    De-puffing Roller Eye Treatment [$19.99]
    Nourishing Night Cream [$19.99]

LIVE CLEAN products are available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Wal-Mart in Canada only.

Here is what the packaging looks like so you can easily spot the products in the stores:

Have you tried any of their products? How do you like them?

First up to try … Smoothing Facial Scrub. I’m a huge fan of scrubs and I just finished my St. Ives exfoliator (perfect timing!).

I will write a post of my first impression! Stay tuned!

It’s Time to Give your Skin a Treat

    Is it the air?
    The water?
    My diet?
Or is it just my unwelcoming, monthly friend ready for its visit (TMI? lol)

These were the questions running through my mind as I was applying the minimal make-up products I brought on my trip.

Last month I was breaking out a lot and it couldn’t happen at a better time.

This all happened whilst I was on a three-week vacation. When I’m on vacation, I take a whole lot of photos to capture our every moment. Now, looking back at these photos, you see either a ginourmous pimple on my forehead or on my chin. Other than looking back at the beautiful scenery, the pimple is the first thing my eyes draw attention to. If the pimple was not present, you see the scar it left behind as a parting gift. :s
With that being said, last week, I thought it was about time to pay a little visit to fresh.beautiful: the skin studio in Toronto to give my skin the attention it needs. I booked an appointment with the lovely owner, Stephanie. This has been my second time coming to the studio and I knew what to expect — clean skin as soft as a baby’s bottom, minimal appearance of pores and blackheads, and skin that looks even more flawless with foundation on.

I got the Preserve + Nurture treatment which is non-invasive and involves a crystal microdermabrasion and cold laser therapy. These two treatments combined help remove the dead skin and reveal a brighter, healthier new layer. My skin always feels, smells, and looks nice when I walk out of this studio. Stephanie recommends not to wear make-up for the rest of the day and to be honest, I didn’t even wear make-up the day after either. I wanted to get the full effect. My skin looked and felt great!
Cold Laser Therapy & Crystal Microdermabrasion
Canister #1 White Crystals // Canister #2 Dirty Crystals

[In the above photo, you will see stripes in the ‘dirty’ crystal canister. Each stripe represents a past client — mine being on the top, of course. The crystals pass through from the clean white crystal canister to the second canister. Depending on how dirty your skin is, it can come out as being black, grey, speckled grey, clumpy, spread-out, etc. Stephanie opened the canister to analyze my ‘stripe’ for me because I was curious and she said it was speckled grey, meaning it wasn’t bright white nor dark black. So I’ll take that as my skin not being too dirty! lol Woohoo!]

I e-mailed Stephanie a few questions which she happily answered. Hopefully you find this information helpful!
    1. Tell us about your Preserve + Nurture treatment? How is it different from most facials?
Preserve+Nurture is more therapy for the skin than a facial. It’s specific treatments for the skin that helps to stimulate and “jumpstart” cellular processes above and beneath it’s surface to not only have your skin look great, but work at its optimal best. It’s differs because it’s non-invasive, there is no trauma to the skin, and yet, you still receive a good cleaning and an intense hydration. It also differs because 99% of my clientele are still able to leave my studio and go about their day. There is no downtime. You will not look like you had your face peeled raw. Instead, you will just have a healthy flush.

    1. Why is it important to get a facial?

Just like you maintain your hair everyday,  wash your clothing every week,  or give your car an oil change every few months, every now and then, they just need a good maintenance check by a professional (your hairdresser, your alterationist or drycleaner, your mechanic).  Even if you take great care of your skin and exfoliate regularly, there is build-up or dirt, grime, and oil floating deep beneath the skin that you just can seem to get rid off.  In addition, as you age your skin does not repair itself as quickly as it used to or produce as much collagen. A preserve+nurture treatment can definitely help in that department.

    1. How often can you get a facial?

Well, it doesn’t hurt to try and get in to see a professional once a month. If not for your skin, for your mind – it’s a great way to treat yourself and relax. But, I appreciate that a budget is a budget. I tell all my clientele that it is all about how they feel about their skin! If they have some major issues that they would like to address and our cold laser treatment can help them if they invest in an aggressive treatment schedule, then I will be seeing them every 10 to 14 days. If they have some minor issues they want to keep at bay, every 4 to 5 weeks.  If it’s just about routine maintenance and they want to have a good cleaning but need to stay on top of their budget, then try to schedule something every 7 to 8 weeks, or, once a season.

    1. How can you take care of your skin in between facial appointments?

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. If you have a skincare routine that suits you already and doesn’t cause you to breakout – or better yet, minimizes what breakout you already have – don’t change it. But you can add to it. I always tell my clients to invest in a gentle exfoliator to use once a week.  And don’t forget the holy must of musts – Sunscreen.

    1. What if you can’t afford a facial? How can people take good care of their skin?

Again, exfoliate and protect.  Removing the outermost layer of skin regularly will keep you looking fresh-faced. Protecting with sunscreen will fight against sun damage – a huge player in the signs of aging.  There is also ways to keep your skin looking great through proper diet … but you’d need a whole other blog post to tackle that!

    1. What is the difference between men’s skin vs. women’s skin? Can men get facials too?

Yes! men can get facials. Obviously, there are the more visible differences between men and women and their skin. Men’s skin is thicker, sometimes a little more rough BUT the two sexes share all the same problems from blackheads, large pores and oily skin.  Even sensitivity. However I believe that the difference between men’s skin to women’s skin, is not really different between women to women.

    1. When we first met and I asked you how you got to where you are now, I was inspired by your story. What inspired you to start your own business (BlushPretty and fresh.beautiful: the skin studio)?

I would have to say that my family inspired me most. And the fear that I would never watch my children grow up. I liked working in law, but it wasn’t easy. Long hours, office politics, bitchy people (and I’m not talking about the women) … while I liked and adored my immediate boss at my last firm, I really couldn’t take it any longer. I had already established BP on the side and just thought to myself … I have nothing to lose.  So I went for it … it meant being able to wake up and have breakfast with my son and volunteering at his school for the book program that year. It meant being able to be home to attempt making a decent dinner for my husband. It meant having a second child 5 years after the first. It also meant that I got to be in charge of what I wanted my life to be like!

    1. Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue their dream (ahem, myself and many others lol), but are afraid to make the move?
Well, my first piece: don’t be afraid. I mean, what’s the point? Are you afraid someone will say no – cause I’m sure you’ve received plenty of “no’s” in your lifetime – what’s a few more? Are you afraid you won’t be able to bring in enough to pay the bills? Well, you have your health, your mind and your drive still. You may have left your job to try and pursue something big, but no one said you can never go back. You can always go back. Are you afraid that once you get there the dream won’t be as great as you thought? Well, remember what they say, the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side … 10 to 1 the dream you’re living is AWESOME and you just don’t see it because you are always dreaming bigger – that’s what got you there in the first place!

My second piece: Don’t over-think it. Business planning is one thing … but don’t over-think it.  Have a grasp on what you want to do, what you need to do to get there, and one or two main goals to achieve. Set a deadline date to review and assess. Then jump!

Thank you, Stephanie for the information and wonderful advice!
I highly recommend this treatment to anyone. It would be a great gift to add to your wish list for Christmas or give as a gift to a friend or family member. Better yet, it’s nice to treat yourself once in a while …  you deserve it! 😉

“I told myself I wasn’t going to buy any make-up”

So my best friend (aka JB) asked me to go make-up shopping with her. I told myself that I was going to stop buying make-up for a while….so to fight temptation I quickly said “No, I can’t”!! But after giving it some thought and wanting to ‘help a good friend out’, I just couldn’t resist to tag along!! ;P

First we went to Sephora to return an item that just wasn’t doing the job for JB (5 Camouflage Cream Palette). It was too thick and cakey to wear as an everyday concealer/corrector so she wanted to return it.

    FYI

Did you know that as long as you have a receipt you can return your make-up any time at SEPHORA?! It doesn’t matter how long ago it was purchased?! So keep your reciepts ladies & gentlemen just in case you are not satisfied with a product!

Fortunately JB was still able to return this product! So to replace this product, she wanted to try using a corrector and concealer from Bobbi Brown. A few nights ago she tried a Bobbi Brown corrector which I use and she fell in love with the coverage and the texture. So we headed our way to Holt Renfrew where they sell Bobbi Brown.

Boy, was it an experience! LOL Although I told myself I was not going to buy any make-up today, I already had in mind what I wanted to purchase (life of a make-up addict?) . . . a Bobbi Brown concealer to go with my Bobbi Brown corrector. But to resist my purchase, I let the make-up artist help JB first, since that’s really why we were here. She said JB didn’t need a corrector (LUCKY girl! lol) but found a concealer that matched well with her current foundation.

Once JB was done with her purchases, it was my turn . . . DUN DUN DUN

I told the MUA I was looking for a concealer to go with my Bisque corrector so she helped me find a colour. She then looked at my skin and said my foundation coverage was too heavy and that it was not even the correct colour! She said this to JB as well!! She said that we both have great skin and that we don’t need to cover it up this much. So she suggested to give me a mini make-over to try a new foundation.

    Side note:

As mentioned in past blog posts, I’m on a search for a new foundation. I bought one at MAC weeks ago – Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 (NC42). When I first tried it on, I thought it was too BRIGHT and too yellow compared to my actual skin colour and past foundation colours. But I thought, maybe the MAC MUA suggested this to me to maybe brighten up my skin. I’ve never worn MAC foundation, so I thought I’d give it a try. I got many compliments on the coverage and colour throughout the past few weeks…..so I was convinced that this colour was right. Being a make-up artist myself, I am more critical and indecisive of myself (but I guess everyone else feels that way about themselves too).

So back to my story, the Bobbi Brown MUA tried the Skin Foundation SPF 15 in
Honey and it looked sooo good on me! She also put on the Honey concealer over the Bisque corrector. The entire coverage was great and because my skin has been a little oily than usual I liked that this foundation wasn’t dewy and it had a lightweight matte coverage.

After she finished with my mini make-over she looked at my skin and said that she was thinking of trying a foundation a tad bit lighter because as time went by the Honey foundation got darker on my skin (due to oxidization which I’ve mentioned in a past blot post). So she tested the Warm Natural which is half a shade lighter on my neck and to me either one looked good and there wasn’t a big difference in colour. So I told her I liked the one she originally applied on me – Honey. She then laid out on the table all the products she used on me (including the bronzer and blush) and as she was going through them one by one, I started GUESStimating how much this was going to cost me . . . even if I were to just get the foundation and concealer . . . I thought to myself, “I told myself I was not going to buy make-up today and here I am spending over $100!!”. So I kindly told the MUA that I was going to walk around the mall and let this foundation sit. I had to think about it and I had to ensure that this was the perfect colour for me as I wanted to see if the colour would get any more darker due to oxidization…..so she was nice enough to write the colours on her business card and I said I’d come back after we were done shopping……….

    and…..

    I didn’t! :S

Instead I bought TWO PAIRS OF SHOESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHA

    On SALE $30!!

    On SALE $50!!!

Aren’t they cute?! I love ’em!

I told myself I wasn’t going to buy make-up and I didn’t! Aren’t you proud of me?! I sure am! haha LOL Instead I bought two pairs of shoes which still added up to be cheaper than if I were to buy my Bobbi Brown stuff! 😀 (Did I mention, I’m also addicted to buying shoes? First shoe purchase of 2010 and probably many more to come! yiiikes)

What am I going to do with my MAC foundation?? RETURN IT! I found the receipt and I called the store to ensure I can still return it! I even kept the packaging and I’ll be returning it on Tuesday when I attend their “Spring Colour Forecast Collection” event.

I feel bad that I never returned to the Bobbi Brown counter as I’ve worked at a cosmetics counter before and know how it feels. But I just couldn’t afford to spend a load of money on more make-up when I still have some at home and/or in my make-up kit! So in the meantime, I will use my Make-up Forever HD foundation that I still have left and either (1) try a better colour at MAC because I get their discount or (2) cross my fingers and hope that the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation in Honey will be at the Estee Lauder warehouse sale in March!

    I am so cheap, aren’t I? I can’t help it!! I love sales!!

Also just to mention, I enjoyed getting that mini make-over by another MUA, there are times I don’t mention that I am also a make-up artist so I can learn from them and see their ways of applying things. The Bobbi Brown MUA was very knowledgeable…she used to work for MAC in EUROPE! When I told her about my MAC foundation she mentioned that it’s hard for ASIAN women to find their colour especially when recommended by a non-asian person…which to be honest, I find somewhat true (not to be racist at all). I’ve had make-up artists in the past match my colour incorrectly and would give me foundations that had pink undertones when clearly I’m yellow! That was one reason that inspired me to go to make-up school –> to learn how to apply make-up on myself and on all skin colours!!!!

Btw, hours have passed now and my foundation colour on my face is still in tact and did not get any darker. So I will definitely keep this foundation in mind!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this little personal blog post of mine….I’m just babbling away, I hope it all made sense!! LOL ….

    Thanks for reading!

    xoxox tesstheshoe-aholic…I mean, makeupbytess ;p

    On A Hunt . . .

I’m so sad Prescripvites has annouced that they will be closing all their make-up counters world wide on January 31, 2010. The company will still exist, but you can only make purchases online. They only ship to U.S. residents. (Lucky Americans! Sometimes I wish I lived in the States because it would make online shopping so much easier! 😛 But then I guess I’d be broke! ahaha)

Anyway, it will be difficult for me to part with my all time favourite foundation – Flawless Skin Total Protection Makeup SPF 15

My skin colour got darker after I came back from my trip to the Caribbean so my current Prescriptive foundation in “Beige 09” isn’t a perfect match for me. I currently use Make-up Forever HD Foundation in “155”.

The coverage for this foundation is a medium coverage which I like. It’s also not too dewy and not too matte. I think it’s just right. It makes your skin look natural not cakey. I have a range of colours in my make-up kit which I love to use for weddings. But for personal everyday use, I’d like to find something else. The reason is because there is no SPF in their products. Ladies (and gentlemen) even though it’s winter, you still need to wear SPF on your skin! Shocking right?!

    Here’s a little lesson on UVA/UVB rays:

Most people associate wearing SPF only in the hot summer months because it’s sunny…blah blah blah and they want to protect their skin from UVA and UVB rays. But believe it or not, UVA is presesnt all year round. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like and how sunny it is outside. UVA does more damage to your skin than UVB. UVA is responsible for the aging process of your skin. It’s responsible for the elasticity and strength of the skin and its youthful look. While UVB is responsible for giving you that “tanned” look and for creating age spots!! UVB is strongest during the summer as the earth rotates closer to the sun resulting in our skin getting darker if we’re out for a certain amount of time.

Soo…with that said, please wear SPF all year round! 🙂 It’ll keep your skin looking youthful and prevent your skin from aging faster than it should.

I apologize if you didn’t want to read my little lesson! LOL But that is the reason why I don’t like any of the Make-up Forever foundations as an EVERYDAY WEAR as none of them contain any SPF. Their foundations, in my opinion, are more for photoshoots and theatre.

FYI – Foundations with SPF with them create a lighter/whiter film on your face in photographs (white cast). That could be the reason why Make-up Forever does not contain any SPF in it. Well that’s my assumption anyway.

So I’m on the hunt for my new favourite “everyday” foundation. I still have to try Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturizing in “Natural Tan”. I bought it at a cosmetics warehouse sale for an awesome price! But I’m just waiting for my skin to get a tad bit lighter. What sucks is that this foundation doesn’t contain SPF either! SIGH!
If you guys have a favourite foundation let me know. I’m on a hunt…

(I suppose I can stock up on my Prescriptives foundation before January 31st!! :P)

    Thanks for reading! 🙂

    Say Buhhh-bye to Shine!

Blotting sheets are amazing! When your face is oily (especially your t-zone area), just dab the sheet on the oily areas and the sheets soak up all the oil leaving your skin matte looking! The plus side is…your make-up won’t rub off! Highly recommended product. It’s better than re-applying your powder all the time to avoid clogging your pores.

My two favourite blotting sheets are Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets
Mac Blot Film. Try it out and let me know what you think.

    Thanks for watching! 🙂
