For the LOVE of Feathers!

An inspiring photo led to my brainstorming above…
A co-worker of mine, Eman A., sent me a photo of a model with a peacock make-up look. We immediately got excited and planned a photoshoot with photographer, Charles Leonio (www.charlesleonio.com).

Along with the inspired photo, we were also inspired by Eman’s caribana/carnival costumes. So we incorporated both ideas into our photos.

IMATS Toronto 2010

On Saturday November 6th, I attended IMATS in Toronto. For those of you who are unaware of this make-up event, it stands for the International Make-up Artist Trade Show hosted by Makeup Artist Magazine. This two-day event happens once a year at six different cities: Toronto, Sydney, London, Vancouver, New York, and Los Angeles (Pasadena). This year IMATS Toronto was held at the Toronto Congress Centre on Saturday, November 6th and Sunday, November 7th . IMATS was on the minds of many make-up artists and make-up enthusiats the past few weeks and we were so excited that the day was finally here! I was literally counting down the days . . .

I attended this event with my good friend, Ruth who joined me last year too! πŸ™‚ Similar to last year, we woke up bright and early to arrive to the event before the doors opened. Once we arrived there was already a line forming by the door…

Luckily, once 8:30 am hit, the line of excited make-up lovers went through the doors and after that there was no line to be found for the entire day!

Once we got through the doors we did our usual round of walking first. Make-up Forever was already packed with people purchasing things from left, right and center! Make-up Forever was offering 40% off all their products which is such an awesome deal…way better than the make-up industry discount of 35% off! There were two things I was there to get so I thought I should get it at that time before things sold out. Unfortunately the HD Foundation #153 that I wanted to get was already sold out! SOLD OUT?? The doors literally opened less than 15 minutes before we got to their booth! I just left with the other item I intended to purchase – Aqua Black Cream Waterproof Eye Shadow (which I will use as eye liner).

I then purchased $2 lashes and a huge set of foundation sponges at Nigel Beauty Emporium.

Other items Ruth and I wanted to purchase were brushes. There were three busy booths which sold affordable brushes – Crown Brush, Royal Brush, and Cici Fashion Brush. Crown Brush was the craze again this year but because I purchased brushes from them last year as well as from Royal Brush, I decided to purchase brushes from Cici Fashion Brush this time. These brushes seemed even more affordable! I purchased four kabuki brushes for $4 each! Also purchased an eye shadow blending brush, smudge brush, retractable lip brush and eye liner brush. I spent under $25! How awesome is that??

Crown Brush

Another thing I purchased was Fast Lash from Alcone for $8. Ruth told me about a product similar to this a while ago and when she spotted Fast Lash I had to purchase one as well to give it a try. For those of you who have trouble applying false lashes or refuse to wear false lashes everyday, this product might be great for you! (I say might because I haven’t personally tried it yet. Once I do, I will definitely write a review!) This product claims to give you the look of long, thick lashes like false eye lashes would. This product is a white polyester fibre which adheres to wet mascara. So how it works is…you put a light coat of your mascara (any mascara will do!) and then put a coat of Fast Lash on the tips of your lashes. Next, apply a second coat of mascara. VOILA! Long, voluminous, luscious lashes! πŸ™‚

The final thing I purchased was an airbrush set from OCC (Obsessive Complusive Cosmetics). They are known for their pigmented lip tars which I purchased at last year’s IMATS event.

I left this purchase to the last as I was going to all the vendors which carried airbrushing sets and asked the make-up artists the same questions just to get a feel for their particular airbrushing set and products. I purchased OCC’s airbrushing starter kit for many reasons. One was because it was more affordable than Temptu and the airbrush gun size (aperture) was bigger than Dinair’s. Also, it comes with a small size of all their foundations, blushes, correctors, shimmers, and primer which are water-based. This is great for all skin types especially sensitive skin. Temptu has silcone-based products which some people might be allergic to.  Second reason is that it comes with a small compressor with a bag which is lightweight and easy to travel with. It also comes with a battery pack and a cord.  Another reason why I purchased it was because of the wonderful service I got from the owner of OCC, David Klasfeld. He was very helpful and honest and wasn’t rushing me into buying his products. He told me to take my time and he patiently answered ALL of my questions! πŸ™‚ I was also an inspiration to a new nailpolish colour which I’m hoping will actually be created! He asked for my business card and said he would contact me so I’m crossing my fingers that this is only the beginning!

For those of you who are YouTube make-up viewers, you may have known that a few well-known YouTube make-up GURUS attended this wonderful make-up event….Kandee Johnson, Koren (Enkoremakeup) and Elessa (Pursebuzz). Kandee Johnson and Koren both held seminars this day and the main stage was literally PACKED with fans! Unfortunately, this year I did not watch Koren’s seminar but I heard that Elissa was his model again this year and he taught make-up techniques and shared his tips and tricks.

I did, however, attend Kandee Johnson’s seminar and in person she is beautiful inside & out just as she is on her videos!!

Kandee gave away a few of her favourite products as she told everyone how her make-up career began and held a Q&A session. One thing I took out of Kandee’s seminar was….it doesn’t really matter what kind of make-up products you carry in your kit. It all depends on your skill & your technique. I totally agree with this! You don’t have to purchase every single make-up product or purchase products from the most expensive make-up brands to be a great make-up artist….it all comes with the technique and personality!!

Kandee held a meet & greet right after the show and the line was sooooooooo long! I think she said it was about 3 hrs!! She must’ve been tired (esp. for being pregnant too)!! But she was sweet enough to stick it through to the end and see every fan that was in line!

Ruth and I didn’t stand in this long line. But luckily as we were leaving we saw Kandee outside speaking to someone. I thought, this was my chance to speak to her and take a photo with her!

I told Kandee how the first video I saw of her was “How To Get Really White Teeth” and from then on I was hooked! Kandee Johnson is a very talented make-up artist and to top it off her personality is amazing! In one of her blog posts (www.kandeethemakeupartist.blogspot.com) she says,

“make-up is fun for the outside…..
but I want to make hearts feel beautiful….”

I truly believe her saying and this is one reason why I LOVE being a make-up artist. As much as we are “touching faces” we are also “touching hearts” one heart at a time!

Kandee Johnson is another one of my YouTube make-up guru inspirations. On that list is also Koren and Elessa who I spoke to and took a picture with last year: YouTube Inspired

This year I’m so proud that I  didn’t go overboard with the purchases! Being prepared by writing a list of what you need, checking what you already have in your kit so you don’t re-buy an item, walking around first, and having a good friend that will help you resist temptation really does help!! πŸ™‚

Buhhh-Bye IMATS…’Til next year! πŸ™‚

YouTube Inspired

Soo…for the past year, I’ve been wanting to start my own YouTube channel (makeupbytess). One of my passions in life is to teach. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher but never knew what I should teach….until now. I have been inspired by so many make-up gurus out there. I’ve learned so many things throughout the years, that I’d like to share them with you. The tips & tricks I’ve aquired along the way will make life so much easier and maybe help save your money! πŸ™‚

When I was at IMATS, I met Koren from Enkore Make-up (make-up artist guru from YouTube). He was actually the first make-up artist guru I watched on YouTube. The video I watched of his was “Depotting Mac w/o heat“. He seemed very knowledgeable, he explained very thoroughly, and his technique was very easy. Since then, I’ve been HOOKED!

So when I had a little chat with him, I asked him, If you were to give advice to an aspiring YouTube make-up guru, what would it be?

His response, Know your stuff! Know what you are talking about.

We chatted for a bit about how there will be negative people out there who will make comments about your videos, insult you etc. and he mentioned, Don’t let them control you.”

I thought that was excellent advice!

And now… I’m even more INSPIRED …

Stay tuned! πŸ™‚

IMATS Toronto 2009

I just came back from IMATS (International Make-up Artist Trade Show) and came home with some make-up goodies! This trade show does not just happen in Toronto, but it also travels to Sydney, London, Vancouver and L.A.!

Some vendors in the show include: Make-up Forever, Beauty So Clean, FACE atelier, Kett Cosmetics, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Royal Brush, Crown Brush, Cover FX, Yaby Cosmetics, and so much more…

I went to this show with a good friend of mine. It was great going with her because she was very patient with me! πŸ™‚ (Thanks Ruthie!) When we got there, we made our rounds and looked at each booth to see what they had. I brought a book with me to swatch colours, test products, and record prices. Then went around a second, third, fourth time and started purchasing!
Tip: You don’t want to start purchasing products right when you arrive. It’s best to walk around first and get a feel for what they are offering. Some vendors sell the same products for a different price. So make sure you get the best deals!

This year I went with 2 goals in mind:

1. Purchase the Make-up Forever Flash Palette
2. Don’t go over my spending budget

I’m so happy that I was able to accomplish these two goals. I stayed way within my budget and got the palette I was looking. When I purchased the MUFE Flash Palette, they told me there was only two left. So I bought it just in time. This palette is great because it is pretty much a multi-use palette. You can use it for eye shadow, blush, lipstick . . . you can even use it as foundation! I find the colours are very vibrant and pigmented compared to other brands out there such as, Ben Nye’s Lumiere palette and Kryolan Supra Colour palette.

Tip: If you use this Flash palette, don’t forget to set it with a loose powder such as, Make-Up Forever’s HD Microfinish powder to keep it in place.

Another favourite item I purchased was the OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) Lip Tar. What’s great about this product is that it’s highly pigmented like a lipstick but goes on smoothly like a lipgloss! Another plus is that OCC is 100% vegan and cruelty-free! πŸ™‚ It comes in a variety of colours! The colours I purchased were: Clear, Conquest, & Melange.

I also attended a couple of seminars. One seminar I attended was held by YouTube’s Make-up Guru, Koren from Enkore Make-up (enkoremakeuponline.com). He showed us how to apply Naked Cosmetics in so many different ways. They sell make-up products such as, eye shadow, foundation, liner, mascara, nail polish, blush but in the form of loose powder, made of 100% oxidized mica! Can you believe it? I couldn’t until I saw the seminar.

On set for “The Steven and Chris Show” – Weekdays at 2pm on CBC.

I wish I could say I did Steven and Chris’ make-up! lol But, I did do the make-up and touch-ups for some of the audience members on Jan. 10/08 (episode aired on Jan. 15/08).

For those who are interested, here is how I got into make-up:

Long story (i’ll try to make) short…

A few years ago, I took a year off of university and worked full-time. Being in an office environment and living my “daily routined” life (sleep, work, eat, sleep, work eat…), I quickly became bored and needed some excitement in my life; something to break up the routine. I wanted BALANCE.

At the same time, I was going through a difficult time in my life where someone special to me was diagnosed with cancer. Overcoming this battle was very inspirational to me:

Not only should you think about others, you should think about yourself. Do the things you have always dreamed of doing and don’t let anyone get in your way. You only live once and you never know when your life will end. So live every day as if it were your last and live life with no regrets!

It made me realize that I should actually DO the things I am interested in doing, rather than just saying I want to do something and not make any efforts to make it happen.

So I tried to think, “How can I live a happy and meaningful life?”

1. By helping others
2. By teaching others
3. By being creative

Only 2 professions came to mind:

1. Teacher
2. Make-up artist

A teacher, I already thought about since I went to university for Psychology. After two years of university, my interest for being a teacher began to die down.

So to bring some excitement back into my life and to bring out my hidden creativity, I decided to be a make-up artist! I was always interested in the make-over shows on tv and loved the impact the make-up artist made on the clients. Therefore, I decided to go to make-up school while continuing to work full-time. Let me tell you…it was the greatest experience!! I didn’t want to leave class because it didn`t feel like the usual university lecture or class!! The student to teacher ratio was great (9 students per class) and the learning experience was significant!

I had a few people tell me I won`t get anywhere with just being a make-up artist and I started to doubt my decision.

“That job is not stable, you won’t get paid a lot, just be a (fill in any traditional job – nurse, teacher…etc.)….” was what I kept hearing from them.

Thanks to my boyfriend, friends, and family who supported me and believed in me, it pushed me to do what I wanted and what I found would make me grow into a better person.

Let me tell you, the feelings I get from my clients – uplifted spirits and self-confidence – during their time in my make-up chair is breathtaking and gratifying! The enjoyable conversations we have are awesome and it’s unbelievable how much we can learn from each other within that 30 minutes of make-over time! It is a pleasure for me to make their day and I’m glad I am there to help them feel beautiful inside and out!

Make your dreams a reality!

If you have any questions about anything (make-up related of course :P), don’t hesitate to ask. Remember, no question is a stupid question! Someone else reading this might have the same curiousity!

More blog entries to come…
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the useful make-up information to come!
Stay tuned! ;D
