Looking for a Long Lasting Eyeliner? Try This One!

Long-lasting waterproof eyeliner

“I love when my eyeliner disappears part way through the day!”

“I’m looking for an eyeliner that transfers on to your top eye lid. Do you have any recos?”

“The make-up look I envision on my wedding day is the ‘raccoon eye look’.”

… said no one EVER!

It’s crazy to think that these words would come out of someone’s mouth, right? (My hands are up and I surrender if this ever becomes a make-up trend! haha)

A few months ago, I was using whatever eyeliner I had in my make-up stash because my go-to one, which I purchased in Japan, has recently seen its last days (K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo). There have been days this summer where I have come home looking like a hot mess because this eyeliner transferred on to the top of my eye lids (wait a second, why didn’t anyone tell me? :P).

With that being said, I was on a hunt for a long-lasting LIQUID eyeliner replacement that had the same longevity as the one from Japan. I sought out the opinions of my beauty-lovin’ Instagram friends to see what their faves are (click here). Many good brands were named, such as Stila, Eyeko, Make-up Forever, MAC, Covergirl, Kat Von D and Physicians Formula (thanks IG friends for the recommendations!). Two that really stood out among the rest were Stila “Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner” and Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” — two eyeliners that have already been on my radar due to its waterproof attribute.

I went to the nearest Sephora and took a closer look at the two. It was a close toss up between the two liquid eyeliners. Both had impressive staying power and high-pigment application, but I decided to grab the Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” (in “Trooper” aka black) simply because of its bristle applicator (vs. the felt tip applicator of Stila). Although I was previously a fan of felt tip eyeliners, I have been diggin’ the bristle applicators as of late because it doesn’t dry out and fray like the felt tips one do.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

Almost two months have gone by since I have been using the Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” and I am very happy with my purchase. It withstood the hottest of days this summer and left my eyes looking fresh all day. The application is pigmented and smooth with just the right amount of liquid eyeliner running through the fine bristles to easily create your desired eyeliner look. If you are a fan of a slight sheen finish, this is the liner for you!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner - Application Result

As you can see, after 14 hours, it had minimal fade. I highly recommend this eyeliner!

Make-up Application Tip: The less pressure you use, the thinner the line. Therefore, light pressure = thin line and heavy pressure = thick line. Play around with it to practice your control and see which look you prefer!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is available in two shades: “Trooper “- ink black or “Mad Max Brown” – rich chocolate brown. You can find it at  Sephora for $23 CAD.

What is your favourite eye liner? Comment below, I would love to hear!

{REVIEW} Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in “Sultry Samba”

The Rio Rush Gucci Westman Collection is a limited edition collection which was inspired by the “summary nature of the Brazilian culture of Rio de Janeiro”.

Gucci Westman was inspired by the famous ‘Carnaval’ in Brazil and “aimed to evoke a celebration of life, dancing and colours” in her collection. This collection includes beautiful shades of nail lacquers, lipsticks, and eye shadows. But today I will focus on one of the products in the collection.

This collection launched in June 2014 and will be in stores while quantities last.

For those who want to step into the world of wearing bold, vibrant lipstick but are still a bit nervous, I would recommend trying the Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipsticks from the Rio Rush Gucci Westman Limited Collection.

I tried out the lipstick in the shade “Sultry Samba” which is a beautiful bright pink shade with a slight purple undertone. This is a gorgeous shade for a sunny day or even to brighten up a natural make-up look. (Shhh … I’m going to tell you a little secret: I wore this on a day where I felt super tired and it just brightened up my face and made it look like I had all the sleep and energy in the world!)

{Tess’ First Impression}

The formula is not as pigmented as I expected. To get the vibrancy and full coverage of the lipstick, multiple layers will need to be applied on your lips. For those who are vibrant lipstick veterans, I would say this lipstick may not be for you. You can find a more pigmented formula with a similar shade elsewhere (“Fuschia” by Joe Fresh).

On the upside, this is why I think this lipstick is a great way to introduce someone to bold, bright lipsticks. This lipstick is buildable which allows for more control on how light or dark you want the coverage to be which is perfect for someone still trying to get used to wearing bold lips.

This formula is a gorgeous matte finish which I find isn’t drying to the lips. However, a tip for wearing any matte lipstick …  put on lip balm beforehand and let it absorb into your lips.

The shade “Sultry Samba” is a beautiful shade that looks great on every skin colour. Bonus: with its bluish/purplish undertone, it makes your teeth look whiter (who doesn’t love whiter teeth? ;P)!

This lipstick coverage is after three applications

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream

(Top to bottom: Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Antwerp)

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream  is very lightweight on the lips with a creamy velvety touch. Its non-sticky texture makes you feel like you are wearing nothing on your lips. One layer is just enough to brighten up your face and it is definitely buildable for an even more intense look. Its staying power is amazing due to its fast-dry matte finish. Try blotting your lips on a tissue or try kissing the cheek (or lips ;D) of a loved one…It doesn’t really transfer! You’ll be very impressed!

This impressive lip product can be found at a Rexall or Target near you. It retails for approximately $8.99 each.

If you get it now it’s “Buy One Get One 50% off” at Rexall until this Thursday, June 19, 2014! Hurry and get yours now! (I went to two Rexall locations and there selection was running low.)

    Eyes of the Day (EOTD)

Today’s eye make-up look is featuring Annabelle Cosmetics Quad Eyeshadow in “Chai Chai Chai”.

    Annabelle Cosmetics Quad Eyeshadow

    • Very pigmented: Extremely impressed with the pigmentation and color pay-off of this product. With just a light touch, you get a lot of product on your brush.
    • Silky touch: Very soft and silky and when you apply it on your lids there is little to no “fall-off”.

Check out Annabelle’s Quad Eyeshadow on www.annabelle.ca to see other shades they offer.
Currently on special for $8.95 (reg. $10.95).

I paired up Annabelle Quad Eyeshadow with Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara.

I highly recommend this palette. This eye shadow quad has been my go-to, everyday palette to achieve a natural smokey-eye look for months now. It can be taken from day to night by adding more smokiness with the darkest brown colour giving a sexy, sultry look. This product exceeds my expectations for a drugstore palette and is excellent quality for the price you pay. Thumbs up all the way!

    L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder

    Price:  $16.99
    Size: 27 ml (0.9 oz)
Shades: 12 shades (light to medium-dark skin tones)

    To apply:

    • Before applying, shake the bottle to mix the formula.
    • L’Oreal recommends using your fingers to apply rather than a foundation brush. Ensure you have clean fingers so you do not transfer dirt and oil onto your skin.
    • Once you apply one layer, I suggest going back to apply a second on areas that need more coverage (i.e., acne scars) by dabbing it on with your finger. I continue to dab and build on top until I get the desired coverage and it blends well into my skin.
    • This product dries to powder so there is no need to apply a powder over to set the foundation.

    • glides on
    • transform into a powdery finish (liquid-powder formula)
    • no make-up feel

    My Observations:

    • I’m not a huge fan of applying foundation with my fingers. But applying this foundation, wasn’t too bad. Like any other foundation, you just have to work fast before the foundation dries to avoid streak marks.
    • The consistency is very liquidy and more product comes out then what I intend. If it was a pump bottle, I think it would help control the amount of product coming out.
    • The coverage is a light to medium matte coverage. I think it’s a great foundation for an everyday wear to even out the skin tone and cover any light scars or imperfection. However, I do not recommend this foundation if you are looking to cover a lot of acne.
    • This product does dry to powder and it gives such a beautiful finish to the skin. With a combination skin type (oily t-zone), applying a powder on top is not necessary.
    • My skin feels very smooth and the foundation feels extremely lightweight as if I’m not wearing anything at all.
    •  This contains SPF 18. Great for everyday wear to protect yours skin from the UV rays.

    Shade: Sun Beige

    no face primer applied underneath
no powder applied over to set
Foundation faded a tad bit (you can see the acne scar on my chin a bit more)
Nose and area above my eyebrow got a bit oily
    Skin still looked quite even

I have received so many compliments on the appearance of my skin whenever I wear this foundation.  With the lightweight feel and natural, smooth finish I would recommend this foundation for those who want a light to medium coverage everyday foundation. My skin gets moderately oily on my nose and center of my forehead, but I found I didn’t need to powder over this foundation. However, if your skin gets extremely oily, I would recommend lightly powder in those areas or where a face primer underneath.

Have you tried this foundation? What are your thoughts?

      COVERGIRL Clean Glow Bronzer

COVERGIRL Clean Glow Bronzer in #120 Spices

      • Lightweight
      • Blendable matte color
      • Clean
      • Natural

      My observations:

      • This product is definitely lightweight. Not only is the packaging light, but also the application. I swirl the blush brush around the compact to get all three colours and I get just the right amount of product to create a soft, natural look. This product is buildable without it looking chalky or harsh.
      • When looking at the compact, you can tell that the bronzer will be matte, which is perfect! When applied, it gives gorgeous finish without it looking chalky or dry.
      • Since there are three colours in one compact, this compact is very versatile. You can choose, one, two or all three colours depending on what look you want to achieve.
      •  Many people have commented saying my skin looks really soft and seamless. You can’t tell where the bronzer starts and stops as it blends very well into my skin.

This was definitely love at first sight and has been my go-to bronzer/blush for the last month.
I’m really happy that the product lives up to what it claims!

      Price: $10.99
      Size: 12 g (0.42 oz)

L’Oreal’s Le Couleur Infallible Eye Shadows

“Only four weeks after launching in Summer 2011, La Couleur Infallible eye shadow became the #1 selling eye shadow in Canada!”

      Intense pigmented colour
      Velvety texture
      Lasts 24 hours

What is Tess’ take on these eye shadows?
I initially had the chance to try these eye shadows at the Luminato Event. I had the opportunity to get my make-up done by, none other than, Eddie Malter (Official Make-up Artist of L’Oreal Paris in Canada) and he used two colours on me which looked absolutely gorgeous! Click here for my Luminato post.

A few weeks later, I had the opportunity to test out more of the eye shadows and I saw many beauty bloggers writing posts about it. It was pretty much unanimous – we absolutely loved them!

So, what’s great about these eye shadows?

It’s like a cross between a loose pgiment eye shadow and a cream eye shadow. It is finely milled and it seems as if it has a bit of moisture to keep it in its place. When you open the container, the product is densely packed. It’s not super loose and messy like other pigments. Once applied, there is only a tiny bit of fall-out. It literally feels like it melts to the touch with such a pigmented colour and pearlescent/shimmery sheen. After hours of wear, the eye shadow still looks fresh with no creasing or visible signs of fading.

See how densely packed it is?

      • Dampen eye shadow brush to intensify the colour or to apply as an eye liner
      • To reduce chance of fall-out apply with a patting motion
      • Apply eye shadow first before your foundation so you can clean off any fall-out
      • If you are wearing lip stick/lip gloss, apply a tiny bit of eye shadow  in the centre of your lips to give the illusion of fuller lips

I wore these eye shadows to the L’Oreal’s Holiday Cocktail Event the other day. I applied the make-up earlier on in the day (2 pm) and didn’t take it off until midnight. By the end of the night, I inspected my make-up and it was still flawless (I’ll try to remember to take a photo next time). There was no creasing, fall-out, or fading. This was only 10 hours of wear compared to the 24 hours they claimed. (I don’t know if I’d ever wear make-up for 24 hours! Lol). I was extremely impressed with the long-lasting power. My eyelids have been quite oily lately (even after I wear a primer) and I was afraid you would see creasing by the end of the night. But there were no crease lines in sight! 🙂

Eddie Malter commented on my make-up that night and said he really loved it! (Thanks, Eddie. That means a lot! :D). To be quite honest, I was so tempted to leave it on and just wear it the next day because I was so impressed! (But I can never sleep with make-up on so I ended up taking it off.)

I keep going back and forth to loving shimmery eye shadows vs. matte eye shadows. The past year, I’ve been into matte eye shadows, but I think the L’Oreal Infallible eye shadows just made me fall back in love with shimmer.
BUT – for all you MATTE fans, L’Oreal has now come out with L’Oreal Infallible MATTE eye shadows!! YAAYYYY!!! I can’t wait to try them! In-stores now are only three colours, but a black matte eye shadow will be coming out in February 2012!
Here are the colours I had the chance to test:

*Note: I heard in other countries (i.e., Europe, the colour of the names are different but the numbers are the same).

There are many more colours out now, so check ’em out at your local drugstore! 🙂

This is just with one swipe! See how pigmented it is?
What are Tess’ favourites out of the collection?
I love these three colours – 006 ALL NIGHT BLUE, 005 PURPLE OBSESSION, and 013 BURNING BLACK. They each look awesome as a smokey-eye look! Just dampen the brush and you get an even better colour pay-off!

So, does Tess think it lives up to what it claims?

      Intense pigmented colour
      Velvety texture
Lasts 24 hours (well, I know it lasts for 10 hrs!)

I highly recommend these eye shadows. It’s such an amazing quality for a really affordable price (retail value: $10.99). Give it a try and let us know how you like ’em!

Limited Edition: Pari Beauty Holiday Palettes (Review to come)

Yesterday, I received two Pari Beauty *Limited Edition* Holiday Palettes to review …
Tricks of the Trade Palette & the Black Tie Palette.

      {LEFT: Tricks of the Trade palette RIGHT: Black Tie palette}

A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of joining some Toronto beauty bloggers to attend a Pari Beauty event. They talked about their products currently on the market as well as the reveal of their new holiday palettes. We got to see these palettes first hand, swatch some of the products and see a live demo.

Some products stood out more than others for me that day (ahem…ahem…their bronzer which is included in the Tricks of the Trade palette!! :D), but you can’t really get a feel for it unless you actually try it on yourself. I’m really excited to test these babies out!

This morning, I tried three eye shadow colours and the highlighter (bronzer duo) from the Tricks of the Trade palette. First impression?Pretty pigmented! Way more than I expected!

My heart melted when I opened the Black Tie palette. It was as if I saw it for the first time. I’m diggin’ the neutral colours in this palette. Can’t wait to try them!

Stay tuned for a full review. 🙂
