INSIDE SCOOP: Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care

Are you an expectant mother, a new mom or know someone who is? I have exciting news to share with you!

Marcelle Cosmetics and Thyme Maternity have partnered up to create a skin care line targeted for moms-to-be and new moms. Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care will be launching at Thyme Maternity stores near you on November 5, 2015!

Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care

Being a new mom myself, I’m so thrilled for this collaboration (see my Instagram account where I sneak in a few baby photos here and there :P)! While I was pregnant I read that there are certain ingredients to avoid in skin care products to help prevent pregnancy complications and birth defects. Salicylic acid, retinol, and oxybenzone to name a few, are very common in many of our daily skin care products but are recommended to be avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding as a precaution. With already being careful with what I was eating, I didn’t want to add skin care ingredients to the list of “what not to do/wear/eat when pregnant”. This discouraged me and I must admit, resulted in me not really using many skin care products during my pregnancy (thank goodness for that pregnancy glow!).

With already being a fan of Marcelle’s skin care products, I would have totally gone out to buy the Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care line while I was pregnant. Marcelle is a brand that I trust and can rely on with its hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products (gaaawd knows how sensitive we are to scents while pregnant … gag!).

Thankfully it’s not too late for me to use this line as they also have products for post-pregnancy. Heck … pregnant, post-pregnant or not…anyone can really use these products for various reasons (stretch marks, unfortunately, can appear on anyone)! This would be a wonderful gift idea for a mom-to-be, by the way! 😉

Here is what Marcelle for Thyme Maternity Skin Care has to offer:

Stretch Mark Triple Action Cream – $28 CDN

To prevent or reduce the look of stretch marks we should keep our skin hydrated from day one — the day we find out we are pregnant (even though we don’t see that baby bump yet)! This product improves the skin’s elasticity and provides hydration to the skin. It is non-sticky and fragrance-free. I would recommend not only focusing on applying this on your belly, but also on your thighs, sides of your breasts and back, and triceps … pretty much any part of your body prone to stretching! For me, post-pregnancy, I find I can still benefit from this product as I find areas where I have stretch marks still need that extra hydration and suppleness.

Marcelle - stretch mark triple action cream

Facial Moisturizer – Anti-imperfection + Radiance – $25

Ah, I wish I had this when I was pregnant. Although many are blessed with the “pregnancy glow”, we do need that extra radiance and hydration which this product can provide. This product also has properties which help prevent uneven skin tone and diminish fine lines.

Marcelle_Facial Moisturizer – Anti-imperfection + Radiance

Moisturizing Body Oil – $20 CDN

I find best applied on damp skin after you get out of the shower, this product keeps your skin soft and hydrated to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. This non-greasy product can be used in conjunction with the Stretch Mark Triple Action Cream or you can use the cream in the morning and the oil at night (or vice versa). Gently massage this oil in circular motions on your belly, side of breasts, thighs, butt, biceps and back (anywhere prone to stretching) to let it absorb into the skin.

 Marcelle_Moisturizing Body Oil

Lifting and Firming Cream – Bust and Body -$25 CDN

This product tones and firms the skin. We all know what happens to our body post-pregnancy and post-breastfeeding! LOL!

Marcelle_lLifting and Firming Cream – Bust and Body

Nursing Nipple Balm – $15 CDN

Any new mom would be thankful for this product! We all know how much we nurse during the first few weeks after baby is born (and during their growth spurts)! This product is lanolin-free and contains shea butter, sunflower oil, and vitamin E to help soothe the sore nipples and reduce redness. This is also safe for the baby. Gently massage this on your sore nipples after breastfeeding.

LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face} – Smoothing Facial Scrub

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram (@makeupbytess), you may have seen me tweet yesterday morning that I was going to try the Smoothing Facial Scrub from LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face}.

Many of you were asking how I liked it …

Here is my first impression:

  • I was very impressed with how small the granules were. I find the smaller the granules, the more gentle it is on our skin. In the instructions it says it can be used 3 times a week where most scrubs recommend we use once a week.
  • The fragrance of the product was very light and mild. You can tell it is made of natural products (cornmeal).
  • After rinsing my face, my skin felt smooth and looked a bit more refreshed and polished.

You obviously have to try a product more than once to get a better sense of if it works for you or not, but so far I am really impressed!

Let’s Go Green: LIVE CLEAN {Fresh Face}

Have you ever tried a skin care line or cosmetic company that was eco-friendly and cruelty-free?
I have to admit, I think this may be my first time! {eeek! Special moment! Lol}

LIVE CLEAN contacted me to try out their {FRESH FACE} line and I happily agreed! Why was I excited?

  1. Weeks before they contacted me, my friend and I were actually talking about LIVE CLEAN. She asked me if I’ve ever tried their products and how she was going to head out to Wal-mart to give their lotion and shampoo & conditioner a try. She has very sensitive skin (eczema) and tends to react to products easily. i spoke to her after her initial use of the lotion and she told me she received no reaction. That was a GREAT SIGN!
  2. LIVE CLEAN is an eco-friendly, GO-GREEN line.
  3. Completely vegan (no animal products or animal by-products) and are cruelty-free (not tested on animals).
  4. Hypo-allergenic and dermatologist tested.
  5. Claims to be great for extremely sensitive skin.

After receiving their products I also learned that:

  • Their products are plant-based and contains Lavender, Cucumber Chamomile, Milk Thistle, Aloe and Jasmine.
  • Free of all these chemicals found in shampoos, skin care, etc. such as, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Diethanolamine (DEA), parabens, and phthalates.
  • Packaging is recyclable and ‘made from “virgin” materials, making it easier to recycle than most plastics’.
LIVE CLEAN’s {FRESH FACE} collection has eight products:
Foaming Daily Cleanser [$14.99]
Deep Cleansing Clay Masque [$19.99]
Smoothing Facial Scrub [$14.99]
Refreshing Facial Toner [$14.99]
Soothing Daily Moisturizer [$19.99]
Glowing Daily Serum [$22.99]
De-puffing Roller Eye Treatment [$19.99]
Nourishing Night Cream [$19.99]

LIVE CLEAN products are available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Wal-Mart in Canada only.

Here is what the packaging looks like so you can easily spot the products in the stores:

Have you tried any of their products? How do you like them?

First up to try … Smoothing Facial Scrub. I’m a huge fan of scrubs and I just finished my St. Ives exfoliator (perfect timing!).

I will write a post of my first impression! Stay tuned!

Let’s save the planet one face at a time!

COMING SOON: First Canadian-Made BB Cream!

BB Cream has been the talk of the cyber-world for a while now amongst make-up artists and beauty-lovers alike.

For those of you who haven’t heard of it yet, BB Cream apparently works wonders for your skin. {I say apparently because I have yet to try it for myself! 🙂 }

No, BB doesn’t stand for Blackberry (in this case lol)! 😛
It stands for Blemish Balm (or Blemish Base, Beauty Balm — there are quite a few different meanings).

First developed by a dermatologist in Germany,  BB Cream was created to treat and soothe the skin of laser-surgery patients as well as to help cover-up scars and blemishes. It then made its way to Asia where many Asian celebrities have been using  this product to achieve flawless looking skin — this is how the BB cream craze skyrocketed.

Now, BB Cream has made its way to our side of the world! Sold in specialty stores in the United States, BB Cream will soon be easily available to all you Canadians at a drugstore near you.

MARCELLE will be introducing the first Canadian-made BB Cream available in-stores on
February 6, 2012!
Retails for $22.95 (45 mL)

There are different BB Creams out in the market right now some have skin whitening attributes, anti-aging properties, SPF protection, etc.  The skin whitening and brightening attribute is more popular in the Asian market as they find lighter skin is more beautiful and relates to success. However, in Canada and the US, skin whitening isn’t as important as skin treatment. So you’ll find BB Creams will have more anti-aging and SPF properties.

What benefits does the Marcelle BB Cream have?

It’s a moisturizer, foundation, and primer in one!!

Here is some information from the press release I received for Marcelle’s BB Cream:

  • Perfect for any age and suitable for all skin types
  • Comes in two shades but has self-adjusting pigments that transform and adapt to your skin tone.
  •  Oil-free and paraben free
  • Perfume free
  •  Non-comedogenic and hypo-allergenic
8-IN-1 Multi-Benefits
  1. minimizes the appearance of imperfections and pores
  2. evens out skin tone
  3. provides an excellent make-up base and replaces primers
  4. matifies skin and controls shine
  5. offers immediate and long-term hydrating benefits
  6. soothes and calms skin
  7. protects from premature aging and environmental stresses
  8. promotes skin regeneration

For those of you who are interested in ingredients, the KEY ingredients are:

Hyaluronic Acid: improves skin elasticity, hydrates skin, and helps minimize wrinkles
Auaxyl: moisturizes and helps correct imperfections
Glycerine: hydrates
Vitamin E: anti-oxidant to protect skin
Aloe Vera: soothes and hydrates
Green Tea & Camomile: stimulates, reinvigorates and soothes skin
Soft Focus Powders: light-reflecting, enhance complexion

This is a multi-use product:

  • You can wear it alone for a quick and easy morning application since it can act as a moisturizer, primer and foundation
  • You can wear it over your moisturizer as a foundation
  • You can wear it under your current foundation as a primer to get an even better coverage

I know most of you are pretty excited for this launch! For those of you who can’t wait, you can get your hands on Marcelle’s BB Cream even earlier than February 6th!

Thanks Marcelle, for sending me the test product! I can’t wait to try it!

Have you tried BB cream before?

It’s Time to Give your Skin a Treat

Is it the air?
The water?
My diet?
Or is it just my unwelcoming, monthly friend ready for its visit (TMI? lol)

These were the questions running through my mind as I was applying the minimal make-up products I brought on my trip.

Last month I was breaking out a lot and it couldn’t happen at a better time.

This all happened whilst I was on a three-week vacation. When I’m on vacation, I take a whole lot of photos to capture our every moment. Now, looking back at these photos, you see either a ginourmous pimple on my forehead or on my chin. Other than looking back at the beautiful scenery, the pimple is the first thing my eyes draw attention to. If the pimple was not present, you see the scar it left behind as a parting gift. :s
With that being said, last week, I thought it was about time to pay a little visit to fresh.beautiful: the skin studio in Toronto to give my skin the attention it needs. I booked an appointment with the lovely owner, Stephanie. This has been my second time coming to the studio and I knew what to expect — clean skin as soft as a baby’s bottom, minimal appearance of pores and blackheads, and skin that looks even more flawless with foundation on.

I got the Preserve + Nurture treatment which is non-invasive and involves a crystal microdermabrasion and cold laser therapy. These two treatments combined help remove the dead skin and reveal a brighter, healthier new layer. My skin always feels, smells, and looks nice when I walk out of this studio. Stephanie recommends not to wear make-up for the rest of the day and to be honest, I didn’t even wear make-up the day after either. I wanted to get the full effect. My skin looked and felt great!
Cold Laser Therapy & Crystal Microdermabrasion
Canister #1 White Crystals // Canister #2 Dirty Crystals

[In the above photo, you will see stripes in the ‘dirty’ crystal canister. Each stripe represents a past client — mine being on the top, of course. The crystals pass through from the clean white crystal canister to the second canister. Depending on how dirty your skin is, it can come out as being black, grey, speckled grey, clumpy, spread-out, etc. Stephanie opened the canister to analyze my ‘stripe’ for me because I was curious and she said it was speckled grey, meaning it wasn’t bright white nor dark black. So I’ll take that as my skin not being too dirty! lol Woohoo!]

I e-mailed Stephanie a few questions which she happily answered. Hopefully you find this information helpful!
  1. Tell us about your Preserve + Nurture treatment? How is it different from most facials?
Preserve+Nurture is more therapy for the skin than a facial. It’s specific treatments for the skin that helps to stimulate and “jumpstart” cellular processes above and beneath it’s surface to not only have your skin look great, but work at its optimal best. It’s differs because it’s non-invasive, there is no trauma to the skin, and yet, you still receive a good cleaning and an intense hydration. It also differs because 99% of my clientele are still able to leave my studio and go about their day. There is no downtime. You will not look like you had your face peeled raw. Instead, you will just have a healthy flush.

  1. Why is it important to get a facial?

Just like you maintain your hair everyday,  wash your clothing every week,  or give your car an oil change every few months, every now and then, they just need a good maintenance check by a professional (your hairdresser, your alterationist or drycleaner, your mechanic).  Even if you take great care of your skin and exfoliate regularly, there is build-up or dirt, grime, and oil floating deep beneath the skin that you just can seem to get rid off.  In addition, as you age your skin does not repair itself as quickly as it used to or produce as much collagen. A preserve+nurture treatment can definitely help in that department.

  1. How often can you get a facial?

Well, it doesn’t hurt to try and get in to see a professional once a month. If not for your skin, for your mind – it’s a great way to treat yourself and relax. But, I appreciate that a budget is a budget. I tell all my clientele that it is all about how they feel about their skin! If they have some major issues that they would like to address and our cold laser treatment can help them if they invest in an aggressive treatment schedule, then I will be seeing them every 10 to 14 days. If they have some minor issues they want to keep at bay, every 4 to 5 weeks.  If it’s just about routine maintenance and they want to have a good cleaning but need to stay on top of their budget, then try to schedule something every 7 to 8 weeks, or, once a season.

  1. How can you take care of your skin in between facial appointments?

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. If you have a skincare routine that suits you already and doesn’t cause you to breakout – or better yet, minimizes what breakout you already have – don’t change it. But you can add to it. I always tell my clients to invest in a gentle exfoliator to use once a week.  And don’t forget the holy must of musts – Sunscreen.

  1. What if you can’t afford a facial? How can people take good care of their skin?

Again, exfoliate and protect.  Removing the outermost layer of skin regularly will keep you looking fresh-faced. Protecting with sunscreen will fight against sun damage – a huge player in the signs of aging.  There is also ways to keep your skin looking great through proper diet … but you’d need a whole other blog post to tackle that!

  1. What is the difference between men’s skin vs. women’s skin? Can men get facials too?

Yes! men can get facials. Obviously, there are the more visible differences between men and women and their skin. Men’s skin is thicker, sometimes a little more rough BUT the two sexes share all the same problems from blackheads, large pores and oily skin.  Even sensitivity. However I believe that the difference between men’s skin to women’s skin, is not really different between women to women.

  1. When we first met and I asked you how you got to where you are now, I was inspired by your story. What inspired you to start your own business (BlushPretty and fresh.beautiful: the skin studio)?

I would have to say that my family inspired me most. And the fear that I would never watch my children grow up. I liked working in law, but it wasn’t easy. Long hours, office politics, bitchy people (and I’m not talking about the women) … while I liked and adored my immediate boss at my last firm, I really couldn’t take it any longer. I had already established BP on the side and just thought to myself … I have nothing to lose.  So I went for it … it meant being able to wake up and have breakfast with my son and volunteering at his school for the book program that year. It meant being able to be home to attempt making a decent dinner for my husband. It meant having a second child 5 years after the first. It also meant that I got to be in charge of what I wanted my life to be like!

  1. Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue their dream (ahem, myself and many others lol), but are afraid to make the move?
Well, my first piece: don’t be afraid. I mean, what’s the point? Are you afraid someone will say no – cause I’m sure you’ve received plenty of “no’s” in your lifetime – what’s a few more? Are you afraid you won’t be able to bring in enough to pay the bills? Well, you have your health, your mind and your drive still. You may have left your job to try and pursue something big, but no one said you can never go back. You can always go back. Are you afraid that once you get there the dream won’t be as great as you thought? Well, remember what they say, the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side … 10 to 1 the dream you’re living is AWESOME and you just don’t see it because you are always dreaming bigger – that’s what got you there in the first place!

My second piece: Don’t over-think it. Business planning is one thing … but don’t over-think it.  Have a grasp on what you want to do, what you need to do to get there, and one or two main goals to achieve. Set a deadline date to review and assess. Then jump!

Refresh Your Face

Because it’s cold and the temperature is dropping, I thought I’d make a video on exfoliating!

Using an exfoliator is one way to keep your skin looking healthy.Use an exfoliator that has tiny grains. This will be more gentle on your skin. This removes the dead layers of your skin and change your skin from looking dry and dull to fresh and glowing looking skin!!

Check out my post on how to keep your skin healthy:
How to Maintain Healthy Skin

*If you have healthy looking skin, your make-up will adhere to it better!

Enjoy the video! Sorry for the soft spoken voice. 😛 As I was recording this video, the volume was very low on my speakers, but the speakers were literally right beside my camera! 😛

On A Hunt . . .

I’m so sad Prescripvites has annouced that they will be closing all their make-up counters world wide on January 31, 2010. The company will still exist, but you can only make purchases online. They only ship to U.S. residents. (Lucky Americans! Sometimes I wish I lived in the States because it would make online shopping so much easier! 😛 But then I guess I’d be broke! ahaha)

Anyway, it will be difficult for me to part with my all time favourite foundation – Flawless Skin Total Protection Makeup SPF 15

My skin colour got darker after I came back from my trip to the Caribbean so my current Prescriptive foundation in “Beige 09” isn’t a perfect match for me. I currently use Make-up Forever HD Foundation in “155”.

The coverage for this foundation is a medium coverage which I like. It’s also not too dewy and not too matte. I think it’s just right. It makes your skin look natural not cakey. I have a range of colours in my make-up kit which I love to use for weddings. But for personal everyday use, I’d like to find something else. The reason is because there is no SPF in their products. Ladies (and gentlemen) even though it’s winter, you still need to wear SPF on your skin! Shocking right?!

Here’s a little lesson on UVA/UVB rays:

Most people associate wearing SPF only in the hot summer months because it’s sunny…blah blah blah and they want to protect their skin from UVA and UVB rays. But believe it or not, UVA is presesnt all year round. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like and how sunny it is outside. UVA does more damage to your skin than UVB. UVA is responsible for the aging process of your skin. It’s responsible for the elasticity and strength of the skin and its youthful look. While UVB is responsible for giving you that “tanned” look and for creating age spots!! UVB is strongest during the summer as the earth rotates closer to the sun resulting in our skin getting darker if we’re out for a certain amount of time.

Soo…with that said, please wear SPF all year round! 🙂 It’ll keep your skin looking youthful and prevent your skin from aging faster than it should.

I apologize if you didn’t want to read my little lesson! LOL But that is the reason why I don’t like any of the Make-up Forever foundations as an EVERYDAY WEAR as none of them contain any SPF. Their foundations, in my opinion, are more for photoshoots and theatre.

FYI – Foundations with SPF with them create a lighter/whiter film on your face in photographs (white cast). That could be the reason why Make-up Forever does not contain any SPF in it. Well that’s my assumption anyway.

So I’m on the hunt for my new favourite “everyday” foundation. I still have to try Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturizing in “Natural Tan”. I bought it at a cosmetics warehouse sale for an awesome price! But I’m just waiting for my skin to get a tad bit lighter. What sucks is that this foundation doesn’t contain SPF either! SIGH!
If you guys have a favourite foundation let me know. I’m on a hunt…

(I suppose I can stock up on my Prescriptives foundation before January 31st!! :P)

Thanks for reading! 🙂

Say Buhhh-bye to Shine!

Blotting sheets are amazing! When your face is oily (especially your t-zone area), just dab the sheet on the oily areas and the sheets soak up all the oil leaving your skin matte looking! The plus side is…your make-up won’t rub off! Highly recommended product. It’s better than re-applying your powder all the time to avoid clogging your pores.

My two favourite blotting sheets are Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets
Mac Blot Film. Try it out and let me know what you think.

How to maintain healthy skin . . .

FACT: Skin is the largest organ of your body, therefore you must try your best to keep it healthy.

In order to have a flawless and fresh looking face, you have to take good care of your skin. It’s easier to apply make-up when you have a good canvas to start with.

Here are ways to keep your skin healthy:

1. Keep your skin clean (Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing):

* Cleanser: Use foam/gel (oily skin) or milky/creamy (normal to dry skin).
* Exfoliater: Do this once a week. Use an exfoliator that has gentle, tiny grains.Removes the layer of dead skin and keeps your skin looking fresh and glowing. Especially good for normal to dry skin types.
* Toner/Astringent: Use toner which contains no alcohol (normal to oily skin) or astringent which contains alcohol (oily skin). Removes traces of dirt and oil.
* Moisturizer: Use water-base/oil-free (oily skin) or oil-base/creamy (normal to dry skin). Helps to add and lock moisture into the skin. Keeps skin hydrated. It’s best to use moisturizers with an SPF for the day (even in the winter) to protect your skin from sun damage. For night time use, use a moisturizer with no SPF as all day use will aggravate the skin.

Tip: Use make-up remover first before washing your face. When cleaning your face, use warm water to open your pores. Massage cleanser onto your entire face, and then use lukewarm or cool water to rinse it all off.

2. Exercising:

* Increases blood circulation which improves your skins texture.

* Produces collagen which helps keep your skin looking firm and young.
* Sweating helps get rid of toxins.
* Helps clear up break-outs

Tip: Before exercising, it is best to remove all make-up to prevent your pores from clogging.

3. Sleep:

* As you are sleeping your skin is replenished by cell regeneration. Your old, dead skin cells are replaced by new, fresh skin cells.
* Without good sleep your skin will look dull and tired. Good sleep will keep your skin rejuvenated and fresh.

4. Hydration:

Drinking a lot of water helps moisturize your skin and gives it a healthy glow.

5. Protect your skin from the sun:

Ensure your skin is protected by using a moisturizer with SPF. Too much sun speeds up the aging process. Therefore, too much tanning will make you look older.
