{Beauty Panel} Summer Beauty

If you are like me, you would love to appear above the clear turquoise waters exactly as how you entered: fresh-faced and makeup right where you applied it! But many of you know, this is rarely the case! Even if you avoid the water, after spending a day outdoors in the hot, humid weather, makeup can transfer or melt off.

Here are some tips for waterproof, sweat-proof, sun-proof beauty:

  • To prevent your skin from getting shiny on a hot day, wear a primer or matifyer, such as, Make Up For Ever All Mat primer. To protect your skin from the harsh UV rays, wear an oil-free moisturizer with SPF, such as Marcelle Essentials Oil-Free Multi-Defense Lotion SPF 15. Sometimes I like to mix the SPF moisturizer in with my foundation for a sheer foundation coverage with the UV protection.
  • If you’re spending the day in the water, I would recommend Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow in #22E and #28E. Cream eyeshadows will definitely last longer than powder in the water. And say goodbye to raccoon eyes with Make Up For Ever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow. I have used this as eyeliner and it survived during both my hot yoga classes and swimming sessions!
  • Wear a lip balm with SPF. My new favourite is Carmex Moisture Plus with SPF 15. But if you decide to wear lipstick, choose a matte formula such as Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate.
  • Set your makeup with a setting spray, such as Urban Decay All Nighter Longer-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray.
  • If you’ve started sweating, touching up your face with powder can cause clogged pores. Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets are a better way to reduce the shine: just dab the blotting sheet over areas that tend to get oily.

    Calling all Beauty Bloggers!

One question that I’ve always wondered is…

How do you find the time to blog consistently?

As you’ve probably noticed, I don’t blog too often.
I feel it’s rare when I have time to sit down infront of my computer and just blog away. (I hardly watch television too!) I know most people love to keep blog entries short and readers enjoy that, but I’m the type that likes to share a lot of information. (hmm..I suppose I can split the information into different blog posts! :P)

I know the solution could be as simple as…just make time. Set aside a certain amount of blogging time every day or every week. Some people also take the time to write more than one blog entry and just save to post on a future date.

But do you have any other tips or suggestions you can share?

    Feel free to comment below.

I’m sure other readers and bloggers are curious to know as well!

    Happy blogging!

    Hugs,

    Tess

L’Oreal Paris Glams You Up at the 2011 Luminato Festival in Toronto

A few weeks ago, I was invited to get ‘glammed up’ by the Official Hair and Make-up Artists of L’Oreal Paris in Canada at the Luminato Festival being held in Toronto. I rarely get to be the client and sit in the ‘magic seat’ so I couldn’t turn down this opportunity! Plus, it was like icing on top of the delicious cake, getting dolled up by such amazing and inspiring Artists.

    Check out my experience:
I had such an awesome time meeting Eddie Malter (Official Make-up Artist of L’Oreal Paris in Canada) and Eric Del Monaco (Official Hair Artist and Colourist of L’Oreal Paris in Canada). There were a lot of laughs as they were very pleasant to speak with.
Here are a couple of tips that they passed along to me:
    Make-up Tips from Eddie Malter:

*Secret* tip: Do you have a nervous, stressed-out bride? A little shot of vodka, tequila, etc. would do the trick. Carry a little flask in your make-up kit with a bit of alcohol. Feel free to mix a little bit of it with juice. This will help relax the bride and calm her nerves. (If the mother-of-the-bride is too stressed out, give her the entire flask! JUST KIDDING!!)
    •  If your mascara transfers onto your eyelid or underneath your eyes right after applying it, wait until it dries. Then take a q-tip and gently wipe it off.
    •  Does your eyeliner transfer onto your eyelid or underneath your eyes? Try setting it with eye shadow of the same eye liner colour. That’ll help keep it in place.
    •  To get more control with your blush, try using a small brush. Eddie uses a small Shu Umera brush. You’ll see him using it in my video (8:12 to 8:18). For ladies with an Asian ethnicity, Eddie says he likes to focus on the apples of the cheeks and blend out.
    •  For an easier mascara application, bend the mascara wand. It’ll help you get deep into the lashes with that angle as it’s easier to apply.
    • If you have nice skin, don’t cover it up with foundation. Use little to none if you can pull it off. I suggest maybe even concealing the small areas of discolouration if needed.
    ·         Eddie complimented me on my skin and my lips. He said, if your lower lip is bigger than your upper lip, you love life and like to have fun! I got excited because that’s how I am!
    ·
    Tips from Eric Del Monaco:

    •  Do you have annoying fly aways that just won’t stay put? Try using L’Oreal’s Hair Expertise Nutri-Sleek Frizzy Hair Anti-Frizz Serum. Don’t go overboard with the pumping. If you have thin hair, only pump a smidget. If you have thick hair like mine, a little less than one pump is good.
    • When curling your hair, it’s more flattering for your face if you curl the front parts of your hair outwards. It opens up the face.
    • When curling your hair, take each section and spray it with L’Oreal’s Elnett Hairsprays (Strong or Extra-Strong) before curling your hair with the curling iron. It’ll keep the curls in longer.
    ·         I asked Eric if I were to get highlights, what colour would suit me. He said red/burgundy highlights are getting played out and to go for browns…something neutral. Also, thin highlights give a more natural look.
    ·         He also said, if you want something funky, purple highlights with dark hair look great together! I did that years ago and he’s right…it is a great combo!

    ·         I also asked Eric if a short pixi cut would suit me. I used to have the “Victoria Beckham” cut a few years ago and was tempted to go shorter…but I’ve been hesitant because I’m scared! :S Eric said it would suit my face and my hair texture if it was cut right. He asked that I go to him if I ever decide to chop off all my hair. But in the meantime he suggests I keep my hair long and enjoy it for the summer.

Eric complimented me on my hair and how well it can hold in the curls.  I made a joke saying I feel like I’m in a hair commercial!

I arrived to the event with NO MAKE-UP ON! Yiikes!
Here is a before and after:

    QUICK TIP: Summer Foundation

For summer days (especially hot & humid days like today), it’s best to wear a light, weightless foundation. It’s not pleasant having thick, cakey foundation melting off your face! :S
So for an everyday kind of foundation, a tinted moisturizer definitely does the trick! It still evens out your skin tone just enough and with a weightless feel.
Save your money and use the products you already have. 😉 I say there is no need to go out and purchase a tinted moisturizer if you already have a foundation.
Just mix your foundation with a little bit of your daily moisturizer and VOILA you have just created your own tinted moisturizer! 🙂

The more moisturizer you add in, the lighter the consistency of your foundation! So add in as much moisturizer as your face desires. Just remember, be kind to your skin and use a moisturizer with SPF if your foundation doesn’t already have some!
    Happy Summer!!!

    False Lashes

Last month I posted a poll on my blog:

and as you can see, about 50% of you who voted, thought that FALSE EYE LASHES are the most difficult to apply.

I always thought applying false lashes on other people was a sinch! But on myself, well, that’s another story! For one thing, I thought it was a struggle because I had only ONE EYE open, so I felt I couldn’t see properly. PLUS, I could never get my “closed eye” to relax so it was ALWAYS twitching. This resulted in GLUE everywhere! Very MESSY, I tell you. So whenever I would wear false lashes, I would get my experienced “hawaiian dancer” friend to put it on me! (For all you hawaiian dancers out there, you know you love your false lashes! :P).

False lashes are one of those things most people don’t wear on a daily basis. So I too, thought they were one of the most difficult things to apply on yourself. But after you get the hang of it….it’s actually quite easy!

Here is how I apply false eye lashes on myself:

I get many clients asking me how to remove false lashes. No need to fear, I promise you this CAN be painless! 😉

Here is a quick and easy way to remove false lashes:

    I hope these tutorials helped!
    Remember, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be extremely easy for you!

For those of you who voted on my poll, thanks for your feedback! xoxox

    Holiday Look – Smokey Green

    Hi everybody!

So, it’s been a bit of a pain for me when making this YouTube video. This video that you will see is actually my second try. The first time I did it, my camera (for some reason) stopped recording within 40 seconds of my video and I didn’t know until I was done!!! (It still had the red video camera image on the screen stating it was recording….so I don’t really know what happened! :P) So I had to do it again.

I apologize if I’m not as enthusiastic in this video as I had to rub off my make-up and do it again and it was really late at night! 😛 I also babbled too much to the point where the video was too long to upload so I had to edit the video to make it shorter. I lost a lot of good info I wanted to share with you….but I’ll just make short tip videos in the future because I feel like these tips will be very helpful!! 🙂

    Anyway, enjoy the video!!

    Say Buhhh-bye to Shine!

Blotting sheets are amazing! When your face is oily (especially your t-zone area), just dab the sheet on the oily areas and the sheets soak up all the oil leaving your skin matte looking! The plus side is…your make-up won’t rub off! Highly recommended product. It’s better than re-applying your powder all the time to avoid clogging your pores.

My two favourite blotting sheets are Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets
Mac Blot Film. Try it out and let me know what you think.

How To Go From High Gloss To No Gloss!

So here is my first mini tutorial!
Hope you enjoy it and find it helpful!
I know for me, there’s days where I find my gloss to be too shiney or glossy and I just want to tone it down or matify it.
So here’s a trick that I’ve come across from Smashbox, that I think you’ll like.

    OCC Lip Tar – Melange
A matte neutral colour from the 88 Palette

China Glaze Nail Polish & How To Apply . . .

My current nail polish brand FAV is CHINA GLAZE (www.chinaglaze.com).
It has great coverage with just one coat of polish, especially if you are in a rush and on the go!

If you have the time and apply two coats, it is chip-resistant and can last for over one week (this is even without a base coat or top coat)! Another advantage is that it is true to its colour in the bottle and it’s high gloss!

You can purchase China Glaze at Sally Beauty Salon (www.sallybeauty.com), Ulta (www.ulta.com), and selecte
    d salons near you!

So a few weeks ago, Sally Beauty was having a deal on China Glaze polishes. It was “buy 2 get $1.00 off”. In the past they had another deal like “buy 2 get 1 free” but I didn’t know when they would have that deal again, so I just took advantage of the “buy 2 get $1.00 off” deal. Also, if you have the Sally Beauty card, you get the polishes for a discounted price. I think I recall getting the polishes for $2.99 each! 🙂

I ended up purchasing 4 China Glaze nail polishes:

    1. Strong Adhesion Base Coat
    2. Fast Forward Top Coat
    3. Secret Peri-wink-le (#683)

    4. Wild Mink (#001)

When I got home, I immediately tried the Wild Mink polish (pink) with the base coat and top coat. I normally don’t apply a base coat or top coat with my polishes, but my friend showed me a link on youtube about the “OPI Drip Dry” and how fast it’s supposed to dry your nails….and I thought, okay I always get frustrated when my nails get ruined after I apply my nail polish and then I have to re-do them! So I figured I’d try a top coat but maybe a cheaper alternative than the “OPI Drip Dry”. So CHINA GLAZE it was!!! 🙂

    FYI

Strong Adhesion Base Coat: Increases the wearability of the coloured polish and decreases the chance of the colour from chipping. It also helps prevent your nails from turning yellow.

Fast Forward Top Coat: Dries your polish faster and adds more shine.

So here is my new nail polish application routine:

In this example, I’ve decided to use “Secret Peri-wink-le which is like a greyish blue with a hint of purple.

After you cut your nails, file/shape them, and all that…..

    1. Wash your hands

    2. Apply the base coat on all your nails
    3. Wait a minute or so, then apply one coat of the nail colour of your choice.

    Tip:
When applying the polish, start off with applying the polish in the center of your nail and use the excess polish on the brush to apply each side of your nail. This will help evenly distribute the colour.

    4. Before you apply your second coat, here’s another tip:

Apply a tiny bit of polish on your polish brush. Paint the edge of your nail first, then paint your second coat. Do this for each nail and this will increase the wearing time of your polish.
    5. Wait for the second coat to dry for at least 2 minutes. Then apply the top coat. This top coat helps dry the polish faster and adds even more shine to your nails. It also helps make the polish last longer.

    Voila, you’re all done!! 🙂
Within a couple of minutes your nails will be nice and dry!
I don’t have to wait hours for my nails to dry or worry about ruining them and getting bedsheet marks on my nails if I apply polish before I go to sleep!!!

    🙂
