Tips on Wedding Make-up Application

Makeup application for weddings is slightly different compared to your everyday makeup. The wedding day, whether it’s your special day or someone else’s close to you, is a busy and long-filled day. Whether you are getting your makeup done by an artist or doing it yourself, here are some tips to ensure you get the best wearing power from your look:

  • Take care of your skin leading up to the wedding day: drink lots of water, exfoliate, tone and moisturize.
  • For hot spring/summer wedding days, to ensure your foundation doesn’t melt off your face, apply a face primer, like Cover FX Skin Prep Nourishing Foundation Primer. Not only does this act as a great base for a smoother foundation application, it keeps the oils in for a long lasting finish.
  • To avoid eye shadow from creasing due to the oils and heat, apply an eyelid primer to your eyes, Urban Decay Primer Potion. This increases the staying power of your eye shadow as well as makes the colours more vibrant.
  • Stay away from too much shimmer on the eyes, face, and lips. It’s not flattering in photos.
  • If you know you will get teary-eyed throughout the event, waterproof products are the way to go. Try using Make Up For Ever Waterfproof Cream Eyeshadow in “Aqua Black” as your eyeliner and L’Oréal Waterproof Volumunious mascara to pump up your lashes.
  • To avoid applying your lipstick too many times throughout the day, fill your lips in with lip liner to use as the lipstick base, L’Oreal Colour Riche Anti-Feathering Lip Liner. Apply a matte lipstick over it to increase the wear, Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate. Remember to moisturize your lips before applying the lip products; this will help prevent your lips from drying out.
  • To keep your makeup looking fresh all day, set it with a setting spray, Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Spray.
  • If you have an excellent makeup application, all you need to pop in your clutch is a lipstick and blotting sheets, Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets for minimal touch-ups throughout the day!
  • Remember, your makeup should only be an enhanced version of yourself. You want to look and feel beautiful and still look like YOU!

{Ghierhol + Andrew} Wedding

I met Ghierhol when we were in our late teens through a good friend of ours.
She is such a beautiful person inside and out and not to mention talented … I remember she is such a great dancer!

When I found out she was engaged, I was ecstatic for her! She deserves nothing but the best and I’m happy she found & married the love of her life…

Client Experiences …

Maritess (Tess) did a SPECTACULAR job on my wedding day!  She was on time and very thorough.  She really knows how to go the extra mile to help make your day stress-free.  She was a joy to be around and my make up held the entire night!  No touch ups were required, not even my lip colour.  I recommend Tess to all the ladies who want to LOOK AND FEEL gorgeous on their wedding day (or any other day for that matter)!  Looking forward to seeing you on TV, Maritess!

– Pearl G.

Tess did my make-up for me on my wedding day last year. She did such and excellent job, and the make-up lasted well into the night. She used top quality products, and also was so receptive to what I wanted. On what is a very stressful day for any bride she took the stress away for what all women care about most, looking the best you’ve ever looked. She showed up at my house early and even called ahead of time to let us know she was on her way. I can’t recommend her enough. Not only is she exceptional at what she does, but she’s also an amazing person. And I can’t thank her enough.

– Jaicel Aquino

Tess is an amazing person to work and create with. Her focus and creativity makes it easy for one to appreciate her talents and dedication to her craft. As much as she is a good friend to me, she has also been an inspiration; and I always look forward to our future projects.

– Juanito Christopher

“Having worked with many individuals in this industry, Tess is a definite stand-out. Her passion for what she does clearly translates to her beautiful work, her professionalism, and her desire to go the extra mile. Truly one of the best, most easy-going artists out there!”

– Patrick Lacsina

Words cannot fully describe how Maritess made my vintage wedding theme come true.  Her vision and professionalism with picking specific colours for each bridesmaid was amazing.  At first, my bridesmaids were hesitant to wear red lipstick on my wedding day but Maritess picked the perfect red for each bridesmaid.  My girls loved their lip colour so much that they were on the hunt to buy the lipstick for themselves.  Looking back at my wedding photos, I realized how perfect my makeup looked even in black and white photos.  Thank you Maritess for your creativity, imagination, and professionalism.  You definitely made my vintage wedding a memorable one!

From prom to my 18th debut, Tess has done an amazing job! I also got her to do my cousin’s debut, and her work always turns out beautifully done. With such passion, talents and creativity each experience is always a different one. Not only will she just do our make-up, she’ll share tips that we can take and use for future references. She takes that extra step to make sure everything and everyone looks their best. She will get you glowing with radiance, making you look and feel gorgeous inside and out.
Maria (Tess) and I worked together for two and a half years and in that time I was always so impressed not only with her own make up, but also the make up I had seen her do for brides to be. So naturally when it was my big day, she was the only person I wanted to turn me into a beautiful bride. I could not have been happier with how it all turned out! Maria (Tess) made me, my bridesmaids and my mom all look gorgeous, and was able to take our completely inarticulate ideas and come up with something that looked incredible. She made great suggestions and we all looked and felt beautiful without looking over the top. I cannot recommend her services enough!

Jaime Prichard

Did you enjoy working with Tess? Are there any suggestions you would like to make?

If you would like to share your experience with Tess, feel free to send an e-mail to makeupbytess[at] and we’ll post your experience here. Thanks!

J + A Wedding

Last weekend I witnessed the lovely couple, Jaime and Anthony, commit their lives to one another. Not only did I get to celebrate with the bride and groom, but I had the opportunity to be the beautiful bride’s make-up artist that morning!

Jaime and I were previous co-workers and ‘bathroom break’ buddies. Hahaha
During these breaks we would talk about what we did the previous day/weekend. These convos included the juicy topic of dating…which I was always interested in hearing about.

Looking back, I was actually there through it all! From her first date with Anthony, to their proposal, and now their wedding. Seeing (hearing) Jaime go through these stages in her life, made me feel honoured when she asked me to be her make-up artist.

Thank you to Rapunzel’s Hair Salon in St. Catharines, for letting me use one of their stations to set-up and apply the make-up.

Below are some photos of the final look of Jaime, her two bridesmaids, and her mother.
I took ‘before photos’ of the two bridesmaids but forgot to take the before photo of Jaime and her mom. So I decided to just leave the before photos out! 🙂

Jaime & Anthony’s wedding was held in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was such an intimate, quaint reception with different wines to compliment each delicious dish and a jar of jam as a thank-you gift.

One of my favourite things from their wedding was this…

Isn’t this creative? Personalized bobble-heads used as cake-toppers!
What’s even more creative is that the cake is made up of cheese!
Nope, not the usual sweet, delicious cheesecake, but… a cake made out of CHEESE!
The photo above is the top tier of Jaime & Anthony’s wedding cake.
Their wedding cake was made up of about five or six tiers of different kind of cheese.
Crackers and wine were served to go along with this delicious cake!

 Congratulations Jaime & Anthony!
I wish you a lifetime of happiness & love!

M & M Wedding

Whenever I do bridal make-up, I always enjoy seeing how close the families are on the day of the wedding. Family is definitely the heart of it all and seeing them (the ladies of the family) all in one room, helping each other get ready, seeing the excitement on their faces, and just being there for the bride’s special day is such a wonderful thing to witness.

I had the pleasure of doing Mia’s make-up for her special day along with doing the make-up for three of her sisters and her mom. I loved how you can see how close they are. Not only are they all beautiful to begin with, they all light up the room with their easy-going personalities.

All these beautiful ladies, wear minimal make-up on a daily basis. So something natural that enhances their beauty for this special day was the desired look.

You can see where Mia and her sisters get their beauty from . . .

Passed down from generation to generation.

(L-R) I did the make-up for Pam (girl #2), Mia (bride), Inez (girl #6), and Carla (girl #7)

You can FEEL the happiness and love Mia & Matthew have for each other just by looking at their photos!

Congratulations Mia & Matt!

Thanks Mia for letting me be a part of your special day!

P + R Wedding

An elementary school friend of mine contacted me asking if I can do her make-up for her special day. It’s been ages since we last spoke and I felt very appreciative for her to even think of me. She mentioned that she could trust me to make her look and feel beautiful on her wedding day and wouldn’t want anybody else. I felt so flattered to hear that and of course did not pass up on the opportunity!

As I was applying make-up on her, I just could not believe how time flies! It felt like only yesterday we were playing tag in the field of our elementary school…and now….she was going to walk down the aisle!

All grown up!

What is great about Pearl is that she likes to be unique. One request I have never gotten before was to do make-up on a bride who will be wearing her glasses during her wedding ceremony! I think that’s awesome! Especially if glasses are a part of you! Also, her wedding theme was a librarian theme because that just suited the couple well!

Congrats Pearl and Raymond!
I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness!

J & J Wedding

Here are photos of make-up I did for my BFF’s cousin’s wedding.
Jaicel, like many other brides I have encountered, wears minimal to no make-up on a daily basis. It’s always great to hear that they are open to trying different looks on the day of their trial run. Jaicel’s bridesmaids’ dresses were dark purple so to tie in the dresses with the bride, I added some purple to her eyes but still kept it natural looking.

Here are some photos of Jaicel’s special day:

F + H Wedding

It was a pleasure being Francee’s make-up artist for her wedding day! She is such a sweet & friendly person…we just clicked on the day of her trial run…just chatting up a storm!

Like many women, Francee does not wear make-up very often and when she does, she just keeps it natural and simple. She didn’t know exactly what kind of look she wanted on her special day so we tried many different  looks on the day of her trial run. For all you brides out there, I highly recommend doing a trial run with your make-up artist. This will give you and your make-up artist an opportunity to get to know one another and find a beautiful look that will suit you (not just your facial features but also your personality).

Sometimes it is great to step out of your box and see what looks are out there that might suit you. Francee did just that. The looks we tried during her trial run ranged from natural (browns), to smokey eye (blues), to bright, colourful eyes.

This is what we ended up with . . .

K + A Wedding

Over the summer I had the pleasure of doing the make-up for Kim & Allan’s wedding. Kim had seven ladies in her bridal party, four of which I did the make-up for including the bride’s. Not only did I enjoy doing the make-up because the ladies were great to work with but because it was also vintage-themed! Most ladies tend to request for a natural look but this time it was different! Red lips & bold cat-eye liner was the preferred look. Many women are afraid of red lips because of how bold and bright it can be. But these ladies pulled off their red, luscious lips beautifully! There are so many red shades out there you just have to find the perfect one to suit your skin colour. With the hair and make-up all done, these ladies looked like they were in a 1940’s movie . . .  GLAMOUROUS!

For Kim’s bridal party, I used MAC’s Mystic lipstick and for Kim, I used Clinique’s Plush Red as the perfect red lipstick to make them look and feel glam!

Before & After

I did not have a chance to take a before picture of Frances so below is a picture of her during the trial run.
